Neighbor's early morning construction project

Someone in my neighborhood started their construction project at 8:00am this morning (on a Saturday), complete with loud hammering and the sound of a drill, etc.  Is this allowed on a weekend morning?  Is there anything that can be done, apart from politely asking them if they could a least wait until 10:00am?

If you're in Maplewood, an 8:00 a.m. start for construction on a Saturday morning complies with the town ordinance for noise restriction:

Honestly 8 AM doesn't seem unreasonable.  You could ask if they could start the loud stuff after 10, maybe do the more quiet stuff (e.g painting, sanding, plumbing etc) between 8 and 10.

I believe that the legal startup time is indeed 8:00 AM on a Saturday and 10:00 on a Sunday.

From a contractor's point of view, -the hours of daylight available at this time of year leads to a very short day unless they start as early as possible ( I know a commercial contractor who gets up early enough to drive 1.5 hours to be on-sight at 6:00 AM).  Also, all such work by its' very nature has to be done in a particular order, -in other words, they can't do quiet painting until the end.

in Maplewood the legal startup time is 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday according to the link I posted above

Thanks "alha". I stand corrected about Sunday.

are you friendly with this neighbor?  when I was having renovations done, i extended the courtesy to my neighbors letting them know what to expect and for how long.....none did the same for me.  if you are comfortable just ask if they can give you a heads up so you know what to expect re the noise so you can plan accordingly ie not stay up late the night before...hopefully this will at least clue them in that it in an inconvenience for you and they should do what they can to minimize teh disruptions.

In Maplewood, there is another ordinance (181-7) which contradicts the above, perhaps it is a more recent amendment. States that earliest Sunday start is 11 a.m., 7 a.m. on weekdays and (as above) 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

"Construction or repair. Excavation, demolition, construction, repair, or alteration work shall be conducted only between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. In case of urgent necessity or in the interests of public health or safety, the Director of Public Works may grant a permit for excavation, demolition, construction, repair of streets, sidewalks and bridges or alteration work for a period necessary to complete said work.[Amended 8-5-1986 by Ord. No. 170210-15-2013 by Ord. No. 2733-13]"

If contractors of any sort (landscapers, construction, etc)  are going to make loud noises early in the morning I would prefer it be on the weekend so that the people who are initiating these projects will be aware of what they are subjecting the rest of us to during the week.

If landscapers who use leaf blowers were only allowed to work when the people who hired them were home, I suspect leaf blowers would be banned everywhere within a year.

So well stated. An alternative might be that landscapers be required to service their customers once a month on a weekend with the weekend date to be randomly selected each month.

I suspect that most clients have never experienced a sustained exposure to the din of multiple leaf blowers accompanied by a nearby roof installation.
