National Pizza Day 2/9/2021- Favorite Local Pizza Joint? Only 365 Days to decide

Ok, I love doing these silly threads but this one calls for a slice of local flavor. Sunday. February 9th is National Pizza day which we will certainly be observing. What are your favorite local pizza joints? (I'm not asking what's the best, just what's your favorite.)

I think this should be a judgement-free thread, so if you want to say Domino's or Arturo's this is a safe space.

Tell us why you like your pizza joint! Maybe help your fellow MOLers find a new spot!

We're big Roman Gourmet fans in the house. I like the thickness of their crust ... it's kind of in my personal Goldilocks zone for thick vs thin. Their sauce is yummy and they do a reasonable amount of toppings.

Trattoria is a close second.

We love the Reservoir for dine-in pizza but I don't think it's as good for takeout. Best when it's fresh out of the over to your table. Bring some chianti or pinot grigio!

I want to say neither Domino’s nor Arturo’s is a joint.

There, I said it. I call safety!

I like giving Reservoir’s oozy pies a little time to firm up. The ride home with takeout is just about right.

In the city, Upside (on Eighth at 39th) is good for slices, now that the long lines after an NYT rave are a distant memory.

Thwarted by me own rules! Curses!

You know where that goes.

All right. Enough being saucy with me.

Back to pizza.

I made a special trek to that joint after I read the piece in the Times and I must say, I was not disappointed. One of the best slices I ever had. It was the crust, for sure. Man, oh, man, I think I had three slices that afternoon. This was when i was commuting through the Port Authority and it's pretty much across the street. Good thing I don't live closer.

BUNNY’s!!!

2nd Trattoria

Oh yes Bunny's! Do they still do their Monday night pizza buffet?

If they weren't so utterly festooned with television screens, I could see us going there more frequently. I know they are branded as a sports bar and they're doing just fine without my custom. I just get way too distracted by screens and I'm too rude to the people around me if I'm just there for Pizza and beer.

It is a great place especially if you're a big sports fan.

The Alsatian bar pie at Picketts is hard to beat. For good pizza, I turn to Fiamma in Millburn, or the Trat in Maplewood. Roman Gourmet’s sauce gives me heartburn for some reason.

Village Trattoria for the Pizza, but also the staff and the memory of Angelo Vayas.

We're lucky to live in such a pizza-rich community.

Star Tavern, but I do love Roman Gourmet also

Another great spot! I feel like they are like Bunny's without all of the televisions everywhere. Their menu is also more limited to just Italian stuff. But I love going there for pizza and beer.

I could probably eat an entire one of their pizzas myself. They're nice and thin. But delicious.

We used to like Bunny’s way back, after they renovated, we had a bad experience with them and we never went back.

I don't know how to change the title on my phone. Today is the big day of hot cheesy pie!

Thanks! I never "saw such" a button (say it out loud)

I’ve seen button mushrooms, though.

Back to pizza.

We were Bunny’s faithful for 20 years.  Finally had enough of politics and politicians being allowed to intrude on our family pizza.dinners (soliciting signatures and advertising candidates at our table, etc.), so moved on.

When we want pizza with a full bar, and options that anti-dairy boy will eat, we now end up at Anthony’s Coal Fired in Livingston, but are always open to new options. (son still misses the Bunny’s garlic salad)

susan I'll have to give Anthony's a try.

Went to Star Tavern yesterday. That stuff is awesome. Fortunately, most of the pizza in the area is pretty good.

I love me some Star Tavern Pizza.

Do they sell pitchers of beer?  I remember going to get a pizza and pitcher (or two) back in my youth.

Does Bunny's still do pitchers?

Of course the problem with pitchers is if you're splitting the tab with someone who drinks faster than you.

Star Tavern has the best pizza in our general area.

For local SOMA pizza, I prefer Trattoria or Sabatino's.

I have never tried (heard of) Sabatino's. Relatively new?

Star>Reservoir>Bunny's. Bunny's still very decent though.

Tratt and Roman Gourmet are excellent for slices.

The one place I don't care for is Pirates, haven't been there in years.

Star and Reservoir.

I stopped going to Bunnys a long time ago for same reasons mentioned by Susan.

Pirates changed owners several years ago.  Pizza is not bad -- -- certainly on a par with Trat in S. Orange (how long do they leave those slices out?).

Saba

Sabatino's is on Valley Street in Maplewood next to the Map Building. It opened late summer 2018.

Has anyone tried them recently. I am thinking about doing so.

from Bob Roe:  I have not been there for several months, but the times I got pizza there it was really good.
