Mexican

It's still called the State Diner but the place way up on Valley in the Orange/WO border area is now a Mexican restaurant.  Had lunch there today with a friend and we both liked it.

that’s good to know, since Benji’s has been terrible and Don Juan was closed at least temporarily last I checked.

I still enjoy the food at Picante, A Taste of Mexico, now on Mountain Ave. in Springfield.  I've been a customer for over ten years.

Picante is the only area Mexican we go to regularly but it's nice to have options.  The choices for Mexican are not and have never been great in the area.  I'm always on the look out for new places, that's how I found out about this place.

bub - what did you have at the diner?

Unfortunate thead title. Just sayin'.

We are steady customers at Cactus Charly. I love their food. The only dish I’ve ever tried there and not liked are the so called “carnitas” which were more akin to seasoned pork chops than the flavorful, moist, somewhat fatty pork meat that one generally expects when ordering the dish. But, other than this we groove on their food. Sure, if I lived in Chelsea I’d be at los tacos no.1 all the darn time but CC satisfies our weekly cravings.

Tacos Mexican on Springfield in Irvington -- despite the blah name -- is the real deal.

"Mexican" is not a slur. Would "Italian" or "Japanese" be offensive? It's unclear as a thread title, of course. Adding "food" would be an improvement.

A burrito bowl

I'll give it a shot (I would do just about anything in my never ending search for a decent taco) but, in my experience the inclusion of a "burrito bowl" on a menu is almost as damning as a "wrap".

Maybe it should say "Mexican Restaurant."

If they serve "burrito bowls" perhaps "Mexican Inspired"?

I saw it was in the Food, Dining and Travel section and presumed it had something to do with the first two. It seems I was right.

Cactus Charly is good.  Don Jose on Route 10 is also pretty good.

We like Toro Loco.

Bring the hate. I don't care.

I have no more hate towards these Mexican inspired restaurants than I have desire to eat in them.  I just wish someone would open a decent place that actually served Mexican food.

Imagine if you loved Sichuan but the restaurants in your state only served Chop Suey.

What kind of Mexican food are you looking for? What region?

I actually like a pretty broad range.  Baja, Oaxacan, etc. I grew up in the Central Valley in CA where  Spanish was as common as English so I am partial to that style in particular.

There are lots of different varieties of Mexican food, both from Mexico as well as from various regions of the US that were formerly part of Mexico and/or have many Mexican-American residents.  Just because one of those cuisines isn't to your taste or is different from what you may have grown up eating, doesn't mean that it isn't good or isn't Mexican.

Sure.  That said, burrito bowls and wraps aren't Mexican food anymore than Chop Suey is Chinese.

I mean, if that was what I wanted, I could just head over to Trump Tower.

Toro Loco never disappoints.
