It's been a very fluid situation the last 48-72 plus hours. At the time of Joan's 3:54P post, WeatherUnderground was predicting in excess of 1.3 inches of rain for Maplewood daytime Memorial Day.
Same prediction service currently calling for only .38 inches rain daytime tomorrow. Hardly qualifying for "rain so hard spectators can't see through". NWS calls chance of thunder "slight".
Must this cancellation be irreversible? An outdoor event is so much more memorable.
Call was made by the VFW Commander. He saw the prediction for heavy rain on Memorial Day, especially in the morning and wanted time to get the word out. Weather report I checked this morning shows the heaviest rain for about 9 am this morning. Call may still prove to have been the best one.
Not to second guess or criticize what happened this time as it has been years since we had a weather problem with the parade and I know that the VFW folks are not in the forefront of internet use ....
But for the future, it seems to me that rather than calling a cancellation on the night before, something could be sent out to inform everyone of the possibility/likelihood of a cancellation and identify a time (in the morning) and method that the decision would be communicated then. In this case, they could have said that a final decision would be made by whatever time and emailed via the Maplewood Alert system (which sent out a couple of the cancellation messages last night) and posted on at least one of MOL, Facebook, Village Green, etc. (Once that notification happens, others could pick up the info from there to share further.) For the Girl Scouts, I sent an email like that on Saturday night with a link to this thread for them to check.
I am checking in on participation for this year's parade. (asking for Maplewood Community Music) anyone able to point me in right direction? Thanks!
Contact B. John Kaufman. Send me a pm if you need his contact information.
I just noticed that Jamie has linked this year's parade picture on the MOL home page to this thread from 2016. Now I know why I have been getting queries from some groups regarding participation in this year's parade even though I am not involved in planning or organizing the parade this year. I have passed those queries I have received on to the VFW. However, I would suggest that any further queries, questions, or concerns regarding this year's parade be addressed directly to the VFW.
The one exception to this rule is if anyone reading this message would like to march in the parade under the SOMA Two Towns For All Ages banner. Those persons are encouraged to send me a PM with name and contact information so I can provide the VFW with some sort of headcount for the group prior to the parade date.

I just received official word that the parade has been canceled. The Memorial Day Ceremony will be held inside Town Hall at 10:00 am.
