Magic Fountain

Any know when Magic Fountain in Summit opens?  With the warm weather the little ones are begging to go get ice cream.  We you know of Village Ice Cream in Maplewood but looking for somewhere different.

It had opened for the season, but unfortunately there was a fire there a month ago.  They have not announced a re-opening date.

If you are up for a drive, the Frosty Freeze in Cranford ( or maybe Garwood) at corner of North & Lincoln has the best soft serve I have ever tasted. They also have that color swirl thing that kids love

Open April 1- October and every day until 9 or 10pm

There is a Magic Fountain in Union, at the corner of Stuyvesant Avenue and Vauxhall Road, opposite the Stop & Shop.  There is also a Rita's further up the road on Stuyvesant Avenue, adjacent to the 7-11.

For excellent ice cream not too far away, try Mark & Julie's, on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange; it's in a strip shopping center just south of the intersection with Eagle Rock Avenue.

Another good spot (in Montclair):

I went to applegate farm on Tuesday evening- had no pints or 1/2 gallons to do hand packed. Its too far to go to find they are out of inventory.

McCool's is GREAT!

Addiemoose, McCool's in Madison, correct?  I believe they serve Hershey's ice cream, same as Village Creamery in Maplewood.

Another excellent ice cream place is South Street Creamery in Morristown.  Closer to home, don't forget that there's a Carvel store on South Orange Avenue in South Orange.

Also, there's a Dairy Queen in Irvington, on Stuyvesant Avenue just south of the intersection of Boyden Avenue, and one in Union, on Morris Avenue, where Twin Boro Physical therapy is located,

In Millburn (Millburn Avenue), there's a Haagen Dazs scoop shop and an Emack & Bolio's shop.

Torico's in Jersey City or Zita's in New Providence

I always think of ice cream as what to do after doing something else.  Here are suggestions for local attractions + ice cream outings perfect for spring/summer:

Presby Iris Garden & Applegate Farms (Montcliar)

Museum of Early Trades & McCools

Cranford Boat house (Kayak or canoe ride) & Frosty Freeze (or the stuff they serve at the Boathouse).

Any others?

There's also Scoops on 22 in Scotch Plains. Awesome homemade ice cream with tables inside and benches outside. Near Bowcraft but on Eastbound side.

Some more places to visit, worth the trip or if you are in the area (there are places for lunch/dinner near all of the places):

Dover Dairy (Rt. 46 East, in Dover), link: http://doverdairymaid.com/index.html ;  Denville Dairy (on the main street in downtown Denville, lines out the door during the summer), link: http://denvilledairy.com/; Cliff's Ice Cream (at the end of Route 10 just before it merges with Route 46 West in Ledgewood, link: http://www.cliffsicecream.com/

And here's the link for Mark & Julie's Ice Cream in West Orange, which I mentioned in an earlier post: http://markandjuliesicecream.com/  They have no sugar added and non-dairy ice cream, too.

There's also Nasto's, in the Ironbound section of Newark, link:  http://nastosicecream.com/

Clearly I know too much about this subject, lol.

Scoops is a chain.  I think there is also one on Route 10.

Nasto's is amazing, and not far at all.  We go there more than we should...

jmc, I had my first taste of Nasto's vanilla ice cream (the only flavor served) at The Original Pancake House; both the Whippany and West Caldwell locations have it, mainly to accompany the other diet-destroying goodies they serve there (subject for another thread!).  The ice cream was awesomely good!

Two more mentions:

That Jersey Shore favorite, Kohrs, is available in Fairfield on Route 46 East:

And here's a favorite in Morristown, on South Street (Route 124):

About Cliff's ice cream in Ledgewood:

Fantastic little ice cream shop in cranford and I cannot recall the name.    Dislike the new incarnation of Emack and Bolio in Millburn.

If you're anywhere near Woodbridge Center, right off the Rt 1&9 cloverleaf interchange (first in the nation) try the Colonia Dairy Maid.  40 Flavors, best soft-serve,  Mr.Z loves the pineapple soft serve. Lots of sugar-free choices for my diabetic mom.
  • 1075 Saint Georges Ave (Rt. 35)
    Colonia, NJ 07067
  • Phone number (732) 634-5885

New yummy home made ice cream.  Last Licks on Ridgedale in E Hanover (across from Gate of Heaven Cemetery- east from the old Sandoz off route 10.  It was an Applegate's until 2 years ago.  Excellent ice cream and excellent service.  So accommodating.  The nicest folks.

Torico's in Jersey City has the best ice cream I have ever had. Their avocado ice cream is wonderful.
