looking for private singing teacher for 11-year old son

He's interested in singing popular music but I am fine with him additionally getting any fundamentals necessary (provided the teacher can continue to maintain his interest/excitement in singing). Obviously would love someone who keeps things fun and is trustworthy and is good at working with younger students who have demonstrated some musical ability, etc. (and who aren't crazily expensive grin)...Anywhere in the surrounding areas of Maplewood/South Orange/West Orange, etc. would be fine. I might also consider a small group class if it's "on topic". Thanks for any advice!

Check with Callista (https://maplewood.worldwebs.com/profile/discussions/u/callista), both she and her husband give lessons and are well known on MOL.  My daughter took voice lessons with her from 8th grade on and went on to be in the Canens Vocem, Excelsior Singers, and the Unaccompanied Minors at CHS.

Yeah, a friend of mine has also consulted Callista for this.

I'll reach out. I'm particularly curious her background - is it a more classically-oriented approach, or would she be open to having him learn the fundamentals using more pop music examples, etc? (which my son would prefer)...

My wife Carol Flamm teaches in Montclair. She has a masters in vocal pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, graduated with honors. Over 30 years of experience teaching voice. She has performed in many styles, including opera, classical, and jazz. You might be able to convince her to teach in your home.

Hi! I am an opera singer, but started out as a pop singer, and did broadway as well. I've been teaching voice at the Paper Mill for about 18 years(now that I did the math tongue rolleye ), as well as at my studio in Maplewood, where most of my students do musical theater. We focus on whatever the student wants to sing. The technique is the same for all genres; just the style is different. You can check out my husband going from rock to opera in a single phrase at AlexanderKariotis.com
