Looking for no kill shelter to give up a dog

preferably on Long Island.

Moronic sister once again irresponsibly adopted a dog 6 months ago that she cannot handle. He's sweet and gentle but completely untrained- eats everything, runs away, jumps all over people, etc.

She will not be seeking training or keeping the dog and yes, I know, it's awful.

I'm looking only for drop off locations where the dog won't be killed

I am not certain but I think that North Shore Animal League is a possibility. Also check Petfinder.com and type in her zipcode. All the shelters and rescues will come up and you can begin contacting them. Sadly, as a rescue (cats) there are few of us so please be patient and give us a chance to help. We all need to find fosters when a pet is being surrendered. It can take a few months. Same with the rare no kill or low kill shelters. If they are willing to do intake it is usually limited to the towns they contract with so rescues may have to fill the bill. Again, don't be discouraged if you find few people answer. I'm diligent about answering but I explain it may take up to a year. Many of us will post for people on our Petfinder sites as a courtesy post. Depending on the age or breed it may take more or less time. A breed which has hair instead of fur will get responses faster as it is considered hypo allergenic. A breed which is not common like an Irish Setter may go instantly, you get the picture.  By the way where on Long Island about. Sometimes my dog rescue pals can refer. Please post a picture here. You never know.

she's not going to wait a year. She has decided the dog will go this week. Thank you for this information, Morganna. The depth of her selfishness is truly endless.

You write that your sister adopted the dog.  Can the dog be returned to the place from which she adopted the dog?  Many shelters, rescues, and breeders will take a dog back.

Looks like a sweet dog-- mutts on broadway in Denville  takes in select dogs and retrains then sells them (all above board with shelters etc )  This is a new trend re dogs- buying a pre-trained shelter dog started in california.

thank you. Will call these leads.

Is that a German Short Haired Pointer? There are breed specific rescues. Gorgeous dog. I'm reaching out to a rescue friend.

Age, sex?  Fixed?

This dog would never take a year, that said, a shelter, can be extremely stressful, not to mention high risk for disease. If she could wait a couple of weeks we can try to network.

If you wish, PM me the town or area. My family all lives in LI. She can contact me if she wishes.

Sure looks like a GSP!  And he is, indeed, gorgeous and so sweet looking.  There's a GSP Rescue group in NJ.  This description may explain why Griffin is being given up:  http://gsprescuenj.com/features/

he’s around 2 years old. Male and yes, neutered. I am not sure the breed. I think they may have told her part Red Heeler? But I don’t think she knows for sure. Northport, NY

Morganna, I understand but there are people in this world you can’t reason with or make any sense of. I don’t know what else to say. Sigh. She’s determined to get rid of the dog this week or next at latest. She isn’t overly concerned about a “no kill” shelter. I am trying to, as usual, clean up her mess in a way that won’t devastate her children.

It just never ends with her, does it?

Sorry, but I am just aghast at what you (and the kids) have to deal with.  I wish I had some help for you with the dog, but no suggestions from here.

Good luck!

thank you all for your help. It was a good idea to call the shelter he came from. They took him back today and promised they'd find him a good home. The kids are okay- they were okay getting rid of him because of how destructive he was but the way everything happens is always done in a way most traumatizing to them. If she even thinks about getting another dog, I'm reporting her to animal control (or whatever it's called)

Not exactly a happy ending but it seems it's the best ending that was possible. Joan saved the day!

no, not happy at all. The dog was a hasty decision (as usual), not a good fit for a family that's never home. He spent most of his days in a cage with little attention so it's for the best. He was gentle and kind with the kids but otherwise, not good. Hopefully he'll find a family or person that is energetc like him. Good luck Griffin.

conandrob240, sounds like an excellent timely outcome, considering.  congrats?

We adopted one of our lovelies from the Bloomfield animal shelter. He was surrendered by his owner to that location. They are quite awesome and I believe are no kill (I think!)

Here's the list. S.Orange is still listed so not sure how correct the list is: https://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/New-Jersey/
