Jerry Seinfeld Says Colleges Are Too Politically Correct

College kids are too politically correct for Jerry Seinfeld.

The comedian spoke to ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd for an episode of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" to promote the latest season of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," and the two talked about political correctness and comedy. Cowherd commented how comedians like Chris Rock and Larry the Cable Guy won't perform at college campuses for this very reason.

"I hear that all the time," Seinfeld said. "I don't play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, 'Don't go near colleges. They're so PC.' I'll give you an example: My daughter's 14. My wife says to her, 'Well, you know, in the next couple years, I think maybe you’re going to want to be hanging around the city more on the weekends, so you can see boys.' You know what my daughter says? She says, ‘That’s sexist.’ They just want to use these words: 'That’s racist;' 'That’s sexist;' 'That’s prejudice.' They don’t know what the f--k they’re talking about.”

The 61-year-old star said this hurts comedy, and commended Louis C.K., who recently landed in hot water over his "Saturday Night Live" monologue about child molestation, for not worrying and just doing his thing.

On a related note: I'm a Liberal Professor and My Liberal Students Terrify Me

Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me — particularly the liberal ones.

Not, like, in a person-by-person sense, but students in general. The student-teacher dynamic has been reenvisioned along a line that's simultaneously consumerist and hyper-protective, giving each and every student the ability to claim Grievous Harm in nearly any circumstance, after any affront, and a teacher's formal ability to respond to these claims is limited at best.

they're redefining "liberal" so that it has become a meaningless word. none of these people being described as "liberal" are really liberals. maybe we should start calling them "leftist authoritarians" or something else that conveys that these people aren't really liberals.

So, you're saying that this guy's students aren't liberals, but are leftist authoritarians? Do tell.

BTW: I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that I find it ironic that the modern liberal complains that the word is being stolen.

I maintain that Seinfeld isn't playing college campuses anymore because your average college student was probably 1-2 years old when Seinfeld the show ended, and they have no clue who he is. oh oh

I scanned through his article. I'm not even convinced it's just "liberals." He won't discuss abortion in his class for instance. Does anyone think it's only liberals who get riled up over abortion?

maybe "authoritarian" isn't precisely the right word. but he's describing students who want university administrators to crack down on professors who offend them. but "liberal" isn't the right word either.

Social Justice Warriors? *shrugs*

Being overly PC cuts both way, liberal or conservative. We have entered an age of hyper-sensitivity to anything which offends us. This is only amplified by the use of digital communication and social media. Something happens in the news and thousands or millions jump on their app of choice to feign their "outrage."

SJW's is probably correct, actually. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=social+justice+warrior

All liberals are authoritarian by nature. It is fundamental to their world view where they - the elite philosopher kings need to "take care" of the inferior masses who they see as unable to make their own decisions.

I'm with JFK on "liberal":

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

Back in 1991 in my freshman year in college I had a class called, "Women, Culture and Society" (yes, I still remember the name). It was attended mostly by women and was taught by a fierce, self-described feminist. There was one rule of order in the class: one could say anything they wanted, but if someone else felt offended by the speaker's statement they should raise their hand and say "OUCH". Really. It was a mess. Every time someone made a comment, someone else yelled, "OUCH". It completely deteriorated any real conversation or understanding. So much for liberal open-mindedness.

This. Actually, I can't imagine college kids thinking Seinfeld is funny. A"what's the deal with Lear Jets?" bit might not land with this audience.

I managed to be out of the country while he was the next big thing and I don't find him particularly funny either.

Considering that some colleges no longer allow the term "freshman" because it is "gender exclusive" and others are no longer allowing "ladies and gentlemen" to be used to address large groups because it excludes intersex people, I can see where he is coming from.

Some conservatives may have intolerant instincts (social cons, not the traditional fiscal ones) but they don't throw their weight around on campuses the way the aptly described leftist authoritarians do. They may control discourse at religious colleges but at regular schools, if nothing else, they lack the faculty numbers and student support for such things.

Where is Tom Lehrer when you really need him? (does anyone out there remember him? I loved his satirical songs)

He's probably out poisoning pigeons. Check the park.

We could use him around here: Ready-Aim-SING!
