Is Underhill Track now (finally) open to the public?

Yes, but I think the rules for access may have changed.

What are the rules for access?

The Underhill Sports Complex in Maplewood will reopen for community use on Saturday, February 26, according to South Orange-Maplewood Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ronald Taylor.

Taylor report that the complex, which is owned by the school district, was being reopened to the community now that security updates have been completed. The updates were undertaken after the murder of Columbia High School student Moussa Fofana.

Taylor also presented updated protocols for community use.

The protocols are as follows:

• The general public can use Underhill only when SOMSD students are not present and participating in school-based activities such as PE classes, practices or games.
• The general public can use Underhill but must note that there are groups that procure exclusive facility usage agreements that may impact when the public can use the facility.
• The general public can use Underhill from dawn to dusk (Taylor noted that when groups procure exclusive use they can expand past dusk but must complete use by 9 p.m.)

Taylor also reminded the public that Underhill will close after the spring Columbia High School athletics season on or about May 15 for “much needed” summer construction including replacing seating and bleachers, the press box and turf.

“We expect this work to be completed in time for our fall sports season,” said Taylor.
