Is this asbestos? (!!)

My wife is understandably freaking out - she found this in our attic crawlspace (where we've been sleeping nearby, albeit in a separately connected space with it's own air vent, etc.). Is this asbestos? How would we find out? Thanks for any advice.

Hard to tell from the photo. Could be sprayed rock wool. What does it feel like?

So which is it I wonder? I should add: we had THREE inspectors look at the house 4 years ago before we moved in. I presume they were allowed to inspect crawl spaces and I don't recall anyone raising a red flag about this (just wondering how worried we should be). Thanks all for any further thoughts!

It looks like loose fill insulation of some sort, perhaps rock wool or vermiculite?

Keep in mind that even should it be asbestos, asbestos isn't a problem if it's not disturbed and doesn't get into the air.

Good luck!

If you are that concerned, why not get an expert in to examine the material and tell you what it is.  As stated above, asbestos is not dangerous unless it is friable.

Was asbestos used to insulate attics around here? I thought it was mostly used as pipe insulation.

I agree about asbestos not being used in attics.   From the photo, I would guess cellulose ( shredded newspaper, sprayed with fire retardant).

Whatever it is, my question would be: If it was placed there on purpose, why such a limited area? (What insulation would it have provided?) Looks to me like something that was stored there and simply disintegrated over time.

Thanks all! We will presume all is well for now grin...
