Is there much less activity on the new Message Board?

I'm sure many haven't migrated to the new site and some are still learning the ropes. It seems like there's a lot less activity. True?

seems like it...

yes

My observation, too. My wife set up a new account and has been having problems posting. I wonder if others are, too?

Yes. I think the Bros Ross are going to have to make a strong effort here to get people back. I have fond memories but not a lot of energy to put into avatars and a new space.

I'm using it less on my phone, because I can't seem to figure out how to log-in. Without being logged in, I can't post. And if I can't post drivel like this, why bother living? grin

Yes, the new site does not work well on mobile. Posts often to not fit on the screen and I seem to get logged in and out at random.

I've definitely been on much less since the new system launched. MOL used to be a place where I could go and waste fifteen minutes browsing local content. But now it's a place where I can go waste fifteen minutes clearing cookies, logging in, trying different browsers, troubleshooting, etc. and most of the times I still can't fully login.

In addition to my p.c. I use my Kindle to catch up on MOL. On the Kindle it has been difficult to stay logged in and there are various other challenges to posting. I think that the Kindle operating system is the same as that of many smart phones, so many that would post from their phones may be reading, but not posting. Now that I'm back from holiday with a fully functioning keyboard, I'm back on MOL. grin

The mobile interface on my iphone does not let me post. Staying signed in is also a problem. On the phone, a sign in lasts only one time. On my desktop, after two or three times I have to sign in again. I definitely use MOL less than before because of these issues.

Another one having problems with staying logged in and posts that do not fit on my screen. And agree not a lot of activities going on in the new MOL site ..

One positive seems to be there are fewer of the extreme cranks and trouble-makers. I think with Alex Torpey moving on, some folks have needed to find a new Festivus pole. On the flip side, a lot of people I've enjoyed reading do seemed to have moved on, and the board seems to have lost a little bit of humor and fun. That seemed to be happening before the new format. Or they've been eaten by coyotes, that's possible.

I'm with apple44 - I've missed reading some MOL posters that no longer post, rarely post or became lurkers. COME BACK YOU GUYS !! wink *I sure miss my winky winky emoticons*

I read more than post. Have definitely noticed less activity and absence of regulars, folks that used to seemingly post on everything just to cyber hear their own voice are now MIA.

I think the problem with staying logged in on the phone is that you'll only stay logged in if you're on the same IP address. Your IP address probably never changes when you're at work. It probably rarely changes when you're at home, but if you're on a mobile device it can change often. (For instance, I've noticed that I usually have to log back in when I change sides of the Hudson). This is noted as a security feature, but as there aren't any other sites that I use that have this limitation it seems that this likely isn't 'best practice'. My guess is that this restriction is responsible for most of the issues people have.

For me there are two drivers to my reduced participation. One is that there is no indication of new activity in the "My Discussions" and "Participated Discussions" views. The second is that there is so much wasted white space that on a wide but short laptop screen, all I see are a few messages at a time. My eye wants to take in much more information than is presented in the given space before I have to start scrolling.

I just read that we should be upgraded here at work to IE11 by July 1st. It can't come soon enough. Between getting logged out as I'm typing comments (will copy this one just in case so I can re-login and post it) not having any normal functionality (links don't appear as links, quotes don't work, everything I type is condensed into a single paragraph no matter what i do) I hate this site using IE8 at work with a vengeance. I've switched to Chrome a couple of times to edit posts, but again I get logged out almost immediately. None of these issues occur on days when I work from home and can use Chrome on my mac.

Maybe there's some weirdness caused by the firewall at your work? I use Chrome on a PC at work and I don't have any notable problems. We don't do anything of note with our firewall (just NAT, which is done by a router at home as well) but I know plenty of places do all sorts of nonsense, some of which can affect a lot of sites. Since this site is using https I wouldn't be surprised if a firewall that spoofed https certificates for inspection purposes caused any issues.

You guys clearly are not reading the Post Office threads.

We're all just noticing that it's all that's left. That could be part of it as well. Maybe we need some moderation and any time the Post Office is mentioned then...

It is a firewall issue. A firewall issue which didn't exist until we switched over. I'm hoping upgrading to to IE11 will fix it, but if the Chrome I have here is any indication, it will be worse.

My guess is that some of the most frequent posters on the P.O. issue don't even have digital devices, and just walk over mimeographed copy to Jamie and Dave, and ask them to post it.

I agree with @jasper on both counts... (And I can not get her text to quote. Argh.) FWIW: I also think this 2 line wide comment area is bothersome. It makes me want to type fewer words and use less formatting.

There has been a lack of snowstorms and nor'easters since the changeover.

It is sucking the oxygen from everything else.

But, things are pretty slow politically now, and it seems as if JustMeLaura's unfortunate passing has reduced posts in the virtual cafe type areas becasue she was a frequent initiator and poster.

you mean 2 line tall? It does expand nicely as you type though. What happened when you tried to get the text to quote? Please refresh your browser - this may help.

kmk, there is a little "drag" control on the bottom right corner of the comment box; if you click and drag it down/right, it stretches the comment box to a larger size. At least, that's the case in Chrome. But I'm not seeing the formatting toolbar, and I don't know if direct html formatting still works, like trying to color something red.

Okay, red doesn't work. How about a list:
  • list item 1
  • list item 2

And why is my text running into my avatar?

Hit Refresh on your browser.

I don't bother logging in on my phone or Ipad anymore. Way to troublesome. I think I'm still on as much as I was when I'm at the office though. I actually like the new setup just a pain for mobile use.
