iPhone map app suddenly changing route?

In the last week or so I’ve noticed the map app (the one that came with the phone)on my phone changes it mind suddenly and directs me to another route.   It’s not related to tolls or traffic because it’s happening on relatively short routes where those don’t apply.

Has anyone else encountered this?  I’ve googled this but only come up with directions on how to change a route once I’ve entered it.

I have IPhone 7 runnning 12.1.2.  Thanks.

I hate Apple Map. I use the Google Maps app. I got misdirected more than once with Apple

The Google "lady" occasionally lose her mind too.

An Apple Maps user walks into a bar.    Or a church.  Or a hospital...

We were once in the Wall St. area driving south on the FDR, which is elevated down there, when the Goolge lady told us to make a right on Maiden Lane.  Of course that would have involved crashing the guardrail and falling 20 or so feet to the street.

A friend of ours gave us a ride and navigated using Apple Maps. I followed along with my phone in my hand, using Google Maps. The disagreements they had amounted to a 30 minute cost. Apple Maps is seriously bad at navigating unless it has improved vastly, as this was a year and a half ago.

admittedly it was about 5 years ago, but I had such a terrible experience with Apple Maps I never went back.  I was going from Burbank, CA to the University of Southern California.  Apple Maps directed me to an address in Beverly Hills, which is not near USC.  Good thing I know LA well enough to realize Maps was sending me off on seriously wrong tangent and make corrections to my route on my own.

Use Google Maps.

(But it will occasionally burp also ... just not nearly as often as Apple Maps.)

Or use Waze.  Note that Google bought Waze a few years ago for its navigating technology so the directions both provide should generally be the same.  The advantage is that they can adjust in real time to traffic, accidents and other road conditions and re-route you as necessary.  Waze has also has the feature of user-provided data such as warnings of speedtraps, road hazards, etc.

ETA:  Of course, every once in a while these apps will get funky and provide totally weird directions.  If I find the directions defy common sense, I ignore them and let them recalcuate when I deviate from them, or a shut down one of the apps and try the other.....

Just yesterday, Google Maps sent me home via 287 and Waze via the GSP (from upstate NY).  YMMV

Google Maps may be okay for driving around cities, but you wonder about their accuracy when large distances are involved.

Businesses in outback Queensland say inaccuracies in Google Maps' suggested driving times are deterring tourists from visiting the region.

Interesting how a few hundred yards can make a difference around here where there are so many highways nearby.  From my driveway, Google Maps sends me to 280 if I'm going to Pennsylvania.  But if my car is a block further south, it points me to 78.

Waze all the way. Stuck in Jersey City once on 440, basically a parking lot, I switched from Google maps to Waze. It directed me around 2 side streets and I got around the traffic and on my way in less than 5 minutes. I love Waze.

Very true, but I was at point A going to point B.  It was just a difference of "opinion" between Google Maps and Waze.  Frequently, they come into agreement when I approach the point of divergence, but they didn't this time.
