I haven't read all the articles yet, but I thought this Gannett series on NJ's tax crisis was very well done.

Very interesting article at the link. The linked article makes an excellent point regarding salaries of police officers being unsustainable.
All the links lead to a headline with a blank page.
Anyhoo, New Jersey is a ticking time bomb. I just hope my kids graduate from high school before it all goes to sh*t and I can sell my house and leave forever.
I can see them fine.
JBennett, while this is no doubt political, I encourage you to move this topic out of Soapox:All Politics, as I know that there are many who block that category.
Maybe it belongs in Please Help!

It's time for South Orange and Maplewood to get serious about merging the towns or shared services for police and firemen.

What is the benefit of merging police and fire? Won't we still need the same number of cops and firefighters?

This is a good question. I thought there had been some fairly serious study about potentially merging these services and that the conclusion was that the potential savings was nothing much. But I'm sure others will have more detailed knowledge of this.
I thought it was because South Orange is a civil service jurisdiction and Maplewood is not.

That is just one of the problems
I'm not sure how this problem is going to be solved, even if there were savings.
