I haven't read all the articles yet, but I thought this Gannett series on NJ's tax crisis was very well done.

Very interesting article at the link. The linked article makes an excellent point regarding salaries of police officers being unsustainable.

Anyhoo, New Jersey is a ticking time bomb. I just hope my kids graduate from high school before it all goes to sh*t and I can sell my house and leave forever.

It's time for South Orange and Maplewood to get serious about merging the towns or shared services for police and firemen.

What is the benefit of merging police and fire? Won't we still need the same number of cops and firefighters?

This is a good question. I thought there had been some fairly serious study about potentially merging these services and that the conclusion was that the potential savings was nothing much. But I'm sure others will have more detailed knowledge of this.
