How to cancel EZ Pass? archived

I went to the website. No info, nowhere to cancel in account info. I looked in the FAQs. The info instructs me to "go to the website" or call. I Googled & came up with a litany of complaints of people who have been caught in EZPass hell.

I don't really want to call if I don't have to. Does anyone know how to do this online?

All I recall is that you have to mail the unit back to them.

You have to call and then as Dave said, you have to mail back the transponder. That's what we did when we moved to Florida. We have SunPass here.

Email the question. They are slow to respond to emails but in about two days, you will get an answer.

i called EZ Pass recently for a different issue and was impressed with their customer service. Hopefully you will have the same experience i did.

That's what I did as well. Just put it in an envelope with a note and wait (2 months?) for them to credit your bank with whatever was in your EZ pass account.

eta: Put the transponder in an anti-static bag, or you might get charged every time the UPS truck drives through a toll plaza.

Two month is about right.

I mailed mine to NY EZPass, not putting them into the static bag. They don't tell you on their web site that you should put them in their bags. Consequently, I was charged over 16.00 in tolls when I returned them. There were two tags, with double tolls to the minute every time the mailtruck passed a toll. So much for needing to have the tags on the windshield.

I called and they told me they'd take care of those charges. Three weeks later I get a letter saying they can't remove the charges because I never returned the tags. I called again and told the agent that they were returned priority mail and I have postal tracking proof that they received them three weeks before. The agent said to have patience and when they get to my tags they'll refund the charges.

Four weeks after that, I see a credit for the balance of my account but no credit for the toll charges. I mailed them a letter explaining that the tags were returned and that the tolls occurred during the return of the tags. I gave them a copy of their letter which stated I would not get the credit since I did not return the tags. I also enclosed the postal tracking info. I told them since I obviously returned the tags to give me that credit.

1 1/2 month later and I'm still waiting.

Then government workers wonder why there is a TEA party and such a general dislike of the civil service.

Why are we still using those clunky white things anyway? When my father died in Florida last summer, I had to cancel his account and set up a new one in my mother's name. It was easy, although I did have to hunt for the phone number on the website. Once I found that I just called and worked the whole thing out on the phone and then we got my mother some disposable sticker sold at a drug store for Sun Pass.

It's seems an amazing waste of time handing out little boxes to people and expecting them to return them later. Do they even use them again?

Probably because the FL systems are approx 10 years old while EZpass is near 20. Older tech means harder and more expensive to upgrade I guess.

I could easily be wrong, but I don't think the people at EZPass in NJ are government workers.
