Funny. perfectly matches with the fact that Dem Presidents reduce deficits, and Republican ones increase them. Like clockwork.
Another fact-less post.
This is a fact-less post when you consider congress authorizes budgets, taxes and spending.
Very true. But when one party holds the legislative and executive branches, it's a good glimpse into their true, rather than stated, values.

Valid point.  I still marvel how Clinton was able to work with a Republican congress.  This century is very different.

My post matches up with reality.
What does yours match to?
Real reality as opposed to your reality.

I also got data. Whatchoo got?

Newt, as distasteful as I found him, understood the role of Congress, enjoyed the parry in politics, and wanted to get things done and leave a legacy. Republican leadership shifted almost entirely toward blocking Obama to the point that Obama was left to negotiate with himself. I still think Boehner and Obama could have worked well together if the rest of the Republicans would have gone along. (Yes, I'm blaming most of it on Rs, and they've only gone on to demonstrate their nihilism even more now that they hold all the keys.)

Just saw part of an interview with Newt on Fox about today's hearing. He said it confirmed that the "Deep State" conspired against Trump and that the Democratic Members of the Committee were just engaged in a cover-up.

The most bizarre thing about Newt’s statement is that Obama chose to not highlight Russian interference and the FBI chose to keep the investigation of the Trump campaign quiet. If this were not the case, Newt might have a point. And there is the detail that Trump won the election. Normal people don’t usually rant about a conspiracy when they win.

Probably fortunate that my cable package no longer offers Fox.

I have a procedural question. Should we open new discussions for "How far will Trump go? Pull out of NATO edition" and "How far will Trump go? Plot with Putin edition", or can we just all discuss them in this thread?

Your choice. You do not need anyone's permission to start at thread.

Having just seen this UK announcement, i wonder how future iterations of the family separation policy/DNA tracking process will work, for both your Border Force, and ours??

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/jul/17/genetically-modified-babies-given-go-ahead-by-uk-ethics-body

There’s a Guardian article today on the practice of five essential Rights we should all enjoy while we can. It’s also worth reading.

@joanne How Brave New World.

As we dive and duck each day from the political detritus hurled in our direction, I try to hold on to the topic that has the most daily impact on it's victims. I picture the children that I saw in my classroom and try to imagine them surviving the confusion and terror that these children endure.  While we have a proposed date for reunification, I doubt any of us believe it is possible. And what does a circle on the calendar mean to a frightened child? We keep hearing cries of "take to the streets" about each new assault by Trump, but the one that screams urgent in my ear, is this horror. I would like to see daily coverage of doctors, social workers, clergy, journalists and politicians banging on locked doors and demanding access. If denied, let's keep it on the front page.

Judge temporarily halts deportation of reunited families. The July 26 deadline looms.

Here, one small ray of light:

Morganna, watch for your ICE mob playing these kinds of word games when trying win PR battles:

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/jul/18/coalitions-immigration-crackdown-could-be-an-illusion-expert-says. Everyone did a double-take last week, when the stats were announced, and thought maybe we can lay off the more side-issue protests until we delved deeper into what the reports actually said.

Morganna, I’m a little confused - could you please help me? I’m not sure why a parent, in these circumstances, would waive reunification?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44905276

I can see why some of the obstacles are creating delays, but this seems to imply the parent is just glad to be ‘rid’ of the ‘burden’ of child-rearing. (I understand that’s a carefully crafted impression, too)

I had heard that mentioned but I am seeing so little coverage. I thought that they might have been given a choice to deport and leave their child until they can get a hearing but not sure. Between Russian spies exchanging sex for political favors and Playboy centerfolds exchanging sex for the sake of sex, we are getting less coverage on the family separation of immigrants.

This is a link to a reporter who is now dedicated to the topic for MSNBC. http://jacobsoboroff.com/

I'm also following a group , First Friends of NJ and NY which supplied the link to the video above. https://firstfriendsnjny.org/

heartbreaking article in our online media today about the 15-month toddler reunited with Honduran parents, after 5 months separation, who no longer recognised them despite the daily phone conversations with Mum.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jul/21/us-immigration-baby-did-not-recognise-parents-after-five-month-separation

@joanne yes I saw that story. I think people are looking at the headlines this week and wondering which one will be Trump's undoing, the Putin story or the pay off to the Playmate. Add to that his weekly insults to our allies and his ever expanding trade wars, but I feel these stories of separated families, will be the ones that will leave the blackest stain.

@Morganna, try not to cry:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/23/in-the-last-five-years-ive-eaten-vegemite-toast-893-times-meanwhile-on-manus

Some of the comments are enlightening. Remember, Turnbull is the PM, Dutton is in charge of Immigration, and Shorten is leader of the main opposition party.

I read this last night. Very disturbing. I thought the gallery of art was incredible. As an art teacher I worked with high school students on political issues. My co teacher from the English department and I wrote the curriculum for their senior projects and moved them from the traditional local topics to global issues. We had a few weeks at the beginning of our semester dedicated to Schock - A -Thon, (a term borrowed from our Peace Jam involvement) I gathered documentaries on issues from around the world and students would pick one that inspired them. The one you have posted would have been a contender.

Where are the refugees coming from? I didn't see it identified in either of the two articles that I read.

To be honest, I’ve lost track. They filter through Asia, but many originate in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, Myanmar etc and make their way through to various Indonesian or Malaysian parts from which they can find small boats to slip across, hopefully unnoticed. It used be if the boats could get to Timor or Papua then it would be easier to sneak over on some part of less-patrolled coastline (decades ago).

There are the usual arguments about ‘legality’, papers, ‘queue jumping’ etc but reality is for most people, their homes were not safe, their lives were threatened, they left in a hurry with what they could grab quickly. And we’re a nation losing our compassion.

For stories of hope, see if you can find Heywire on YouTube - this year there are some great kids in rural Australia who settled as refugees and wouldn’t live anywhere else now.

Today is the deadline.

So this was just published here:

Seems overly hopeful to me...
Sigh.

Watching as it unfolds but that is similar to the numbers we are being told but I'm a bit skeptical.

Lots of dramatic news unfolding in Trumptopia so we are in a bit of a news jumble.

Update with a 2 hour deadline. 700 to 900 will not be reunited by the deadline because of immigration's reclassification of these children. Or more specifically because they screwed it up.

The judge will have a decision about it tomorrow.

Just saw comments from the ACLU lawyer.

Our oldest and most respected media company (Fairfax) has just been taken over/‘merged’ with one of the most frivolous and lightweight (Nine, formerly Packer’s stronghold), so we’re battling with the loss of independent investigative journalism and choice of formats. (The announcement was yesterday, already today we’re hearing that most regional papers will close closely)  Basically this leaves us only Murdoch, games shows, or our embattled ABC.

So, most of our information on your news will be delayed in the fallout, I guess. I pray those affected can be safely in each other’s embraces soon.

"54 parents wrote a letter to the American public after they were separated from their children at our southern border. Their stories go against the core of who we are as a nation. We came together to read them after President Trump's administration missed the July 26th deadline to reunite all separated children with their families. #FamiliesBelongTogether "
