How about not throwing ANYTHING at police.

You really can not expect police to stop and investigate what is being thrown at them before they respond. So the solution is just don't throw anything. Simple.

"She disputed the suggestion that officers were overly

aggressive, saying they responded with tear gas and so-called pepper balls, which emit pepper spray, only after they were assaulted.

But some witnesses said that events unfolded differently, with protesters throwing a water bottle or two in the direction of the police, before the police fired tear gas into the crowd"

Police Use Tear Gas on Crowds After Trump Rally https://nyti.ms/2vUSHkj

Let me see if I understand this -

Protesters against the right-wing are all equally guilty, so if a couple of people throw things, everybody in the crowd gets tear-gassed, or pepper sprayed, or hit with rubber bullets.  And the claim is they all deserve it.

Right-wing protesters are NOT all equally guilty.  So even if there's a torchlight neo-Nazi parade, or a crowd demonstrating where people are wearing Klan and Nazi insignia - there are still some "very fine people" among them.

People shouldn't throw things at police just as police should know how to deescalate behavior in crowds that have a few unruly actors.

Let's see..... water bottles => tear gas and pepper spray?  Got it.

How are they to know what is in the bottle that is thrown at them? It is not like they can go analyze it without reacting. There is simply not the time.

Teargas is actually the long standing way to "deescalate behavior in crowds". How else are they supposed to do it?

No, teargas is used to disperse groups. But I'm not going to list a bunch of articles about group deescalation techniques. If you are genuinely interested, you can research it.

how about the cops in Phoenix just get in touch with Boston to see how it's done without tear gas and rubber bullets?

Were there water bottles or anything else thrown at the police in Boston? I do not know the answer to that question. But if not then it is apples and oranges.

first, yes, don't throw things (anything) at the police. Second, the Phoenix police needed better training in deescalation tactics. They could have learned much from other forces across the country.

It can be both.

Yes. Bottles were thrown in Boston. One protester was especially assholic so the riot police drilled him to the ground and arrested him.

If the this had been a alt right/Nazi crowd, does anyone think "burner" would be posting this thread?

Seems to me that Zoinks has chosen his side in this conflict.

the cops reported that objects were thrown, including bottles of urine.  And nobody got tear gassed.  Not everyone is as authoritarian as you are.  Not even Boston cops.

You people so (perhaps willfully) do not get me.

The side is irrelevant. I simply do not like the entitled chutzpah of people who think that you can throw things at the police and then whine when the police react. Protest does not include the right to throw things.

Protests get heated. They're emotional affairs. Especially when your government is at stake. Back in the day (69,70 DC), "getting gassed" was a badge of honor, indicating that you made a great effort. cheese

Burner, no one "likes" these acts. At least the right wing is getting mileage out of these attacks, sanctimoniously professing their devotion to police, even as they praise historical figures who went to war against the U.S.

That GL2 is exactly the point. You knew what you were doing would bring a reaction and you did not whine when it happened. Today everyone thinks they are entitled to do what they want without consequences. It all goes back to all those participation trophies they have in their basement. And how their parents told them they have the right to behave any way they want.

at most two people threw bottles.  thousands were tear gassed.  Or is it your contention that people not dispersing fast enough to please the cops deserved to be tear gassed and pepper sprayed?

Yeah...no it doesn't. Live shot from Provincetown, MA where a 70 year old lady and 80 year old man just got into a shouting match over who had the right of way at this intersection. I don't imagine either of them have many participation trophies in their basement. Some people are just ********. Just ask anybody that you happen to be talking to if they've seen an ******* lately.

(The lady was right. She was on foot in a crosswalk. Come on dude.)

So it those two who are solely responsible for everything that happened.

Some on the alt right side showed up carrying guns in Phoenix (Arizona is an open carry state).

But let's focus on a few people throwing water bottles.

(Edited to add:  Turns out people on both sides of the protest showed up with guns)

Any form of violence, whether it's throwing objects, smashing with sticks or firing weapons, discredits and undermines the protest.  Anyone who engages in those illegal acts among peaceful protesters should be treated as an agent provocateur turned into the police.

Because misbehavior against police and other authority figures didn't exist before participation trophies became a thing.

In 60's and 70's, some of the provocateurs were planted BY the authorities.

Dang. I'm too old to have gotten a participation trophy. Little League was very competitive back then, what with Am Vets playing Elks Club and Rotary. My team was named after a darned deli.

Do not denigrate delis.

Mine was also named after a deli. The Lin-Den. Guess what town it was in.

Maybe we can lobby Jamie & Dave to give us each a trophy for participating in the discussion.

??  Any parents who said this to their kids, or who know parents who said this to their kids, please raise your hand.

Mahwah?
