Hoboken tickets to Penn Early July

Daughter encountered an NJT conductor yesterday who demanded the $3 terminal fee for her to travel to Penn Station on a Hoboken monthly.  I've read over and over again -- haven't I? -- that we should all buy Hoboken monthlies for July, and that they would work to Penn during these early days of the month. But this NJT employee didn't seem to know this.  What's the recourse here?

Did she get a receipt?

She should note the train she was on and where she sat and contact NJ Transit, receipt or not, for reporting an uneducated and likely stubborn conductor (I am assuming she tried to educate the person to no avail). Here is all she needs to tell the conductors in future from the NJ Transit website themselves:

Discounted Hoboken Passes/Tickets

Weekdays – Hoboken passes and tickets are valid on most travel options listed, including on PATH, NY Waterway, and private bus carrier services noted. Hoboken passes and tickets are accepted on early morning M&E Midtown Direct trains. Hoboken passes and tickets will not be valid for rail service to/from Newark Penn Station or on other rail lines.

Weekends – Hoboken monthly and weekly passes are accepted for travel on Midtown Direct trains to/from New York. One-way and reduced fare tickets with Penn Station New York as the final destination must be purchased to travel to/from New York.

Frankly, I think I shall print out a screen shot for future use in case the learning curve for some of these conductors takes longer than a week.

Printing out a screen shot or equivalent from NJT's own website is likely the most effective way of dealing with this going forward.  I have pulled out my copy of the current train schedule more than once to show a conductor that what s/he is telling me contradicts what is in NJT's own publication.

Actually, looking at the update link, the cross-honoring for this may not kick in until the 10th, so the surcharge may apply this week.  It's not 100% clear, however.

FWIW, they didn't upcharge me this morning.

I have to say, I'm a little confused by the paragraph below from NJT.  I feel like these two sentences contradict each other.  Can someone help me understand it?

I read it to say that if you buy a Hoboken monthly, it will be honored to NY Penn on weekends. If you buy a one way ticket, or a reduced fare ticket (such as a Senior ticket) to NY Penn on the weekend, you will be paying the regular NYP fare.

Thanks for that interpretation -- that makes sense, practically speaking, since they can hardly expect monthly ticket-holders to buy an additional ticket if they are going on the weekend.

And I feel the same about the upcharge/terminal fee -- they cannot ask that we purchase an additional ticket for these 10 days if we have a monthly, can they?

I used a $91 Hoboken July monthly on Sunday and Monday to Penn with no questions asked.

There was a conductor on Saturday morning who demanded the same thing when he started checking tickets. Other passengers overheard and convinced him he was wrong. He said something like, "A lot of times you riders know more than what they tell us."

From the FAQ:

Discounted July M&E HOB passes will be accepted to PSNY July 1-9.  Also discounted August M&E HOB passes will be accepted to HOB on September 1.

My commuter spouse reports that the only question he was asked was whether he was going to Penn or Hoboken.  Sounds like the NJT employee in the OP was not informed.
