History of Home Depot location

I know its not exactly MW, but does anyone remember when the flea market closed and the home depot opened?

The union market.  I think earlier than 1999 but I don't recall specifically.  I would have said early to mid 1990.

Around 1999.  I remember that I had to go to the HD in Bloomfield when I did work on my house in 1998.

Before the Flea Market, I believe the site was a Great Eastern.

And to merge this thread with another, I hear that you can go to HD and find out the real price of nice nails.

1999 sounds right. We moved to Maplewood in December 1995 an the flea market was still there for a couple of years. Whatever the year, it opened on January 29, my birthday present that year cheese (although I did love the flea market)

Doesn't anyone remember the Lost Picture Show?

yes, I remember The Last Picture show. The theater had wavy floors, as I recall.

Definitely 1999. We move in a year before and had to go to the Rt. 10 HD on East Hanover.

We moved in in August of '99 and the Home Depot was there and operating.

We moved here August 1998. I thought HD was open then.

Just a question. Why is this in the Maplewood Specific section? You might get more answers if it is in a more general category.

Hell, I remember when Great Eastern opened there... My sister and I got lost on the first day. grin

Gads! I'm so old I remember when the whole area was a cow pasture!!  ....and we called what is now Springfield Ave on that stretch, "7 Bridges Road"....

we built our big addition in 1997-1998 and had to go to HD in e hanover.  union HD may have been under construction.

oots

And who could forget the "Lost Picture Show" right next door where the self-storage facility is now.

because it is very close to Maplewood and many residents would be shopping there...

I remember the flea market being there in the 70s.....

what was 'great eastern'

Great Eastern was an enormous discount store and grocery store.  It was the WalMart of its time (although I don't know if it was a chain or just one store).  You could buy almost anything there -- it had a deli counter, groceries, clothing, stationery, sporting goods, toys, hardware, etc. etc.

and yes, I remember the Lost Picture Show.

I used to go to the Union Market when I lived in Millburn.  My friends in South Orange just about lived there.  It was also the first place I ever saw a Dollar Store.  I agree that another category, more specifically Virtual Cafe, would be a better area to post this in.

Great Eastern Mills. The original occupant when the bldg was constructed. Rear of bldg backed up to the "waterworks" which was a multi acre wooded area owned by Elizabethtown Water and also served as our playground growing up. The other end of the woods was Liberty Ave. In the 60's it was parceled out and developed.

Great Eastern was a chain.

it was no Two Guys.

Loved the Union Market. And the Lost Picture Show was a treasure for showing films that usually weren't shown in other nearby movie theaters.  Miss them both still.

I think "Kids" was the last movie I saw there.

I used to love the Union Market. I was there every weekend in the '80. It was only open Friday-Sunday. I used to wonder why not the entire week. During Holliday season I think it was open every day.

Before the Great Easten, it was a Valley Fair back in the mid 70s.
