Has anyone moved stuff to here from out of state?

I have a few pieces of furniture I may be taking from my mother's estate in Georgia. I need to have it shipped to me up here. I am feeling like an old timer. It seems companies want me to give them a weighed, itemized inventory online, and then they will give me an online estimate. I am going down to get a more accurate inventory, but just wondered if anyone has done this, and could recommend a company to use.

My mother and sister just did this last month: they moved my mother's dining room set (10 foot table, 8 chairs, 2 lamps, mirror and a sideboard) from southwest Georgia to Middlesex County.  It cost about $1300 and took 2 weeks for the movers to drive to New Jersey.  My mother found the company in Florida and she said it was seamless from her end (although they spent hours in her house packing everything up).

What they learned is that: many companies won't give you an exact date for pickup or delivery.  Your stuff isn't the only stuff in the truck, so they have to wait until the truck fills up (this can take up to 2 weeks).  And they are constantly picking up/dropping off items along the way which is why it takes so long to deliver.  So you need to be flexible on both ends of the journey (luckily, my mother is retired).  My mother is not sure she would recommend the company she used (they were the cheapest) because they broke one of her lamps.  But broken/lost items seem to be typical of any moving company.

Most national moving companies will do a partial load and then schedule it into a full truck to the area you live. Erins comments reflect the typical time table with a national mover as they hold it in warehouse until they have the other load ready to go too. the other alternative depending on the amount of things to move is to hire a local driver with a truck to go and pick up. Its a tighter timetable but the cost is going to be more for a long distance like GA because it is time intensive and doesn't have another order to offset fuel/tolls/etc.

give George at UPS store in S/O a call.

If you are going down there, how about renting a Uhaul and driving it back yourself?

This is a bit off the wall, but I have a cousin who was a commercial truck driver for several years (he's doing something else now) and would probably be happy to drive a Uhaul with the furniture from GA to NJ if you cover his expenses and throw in a little  cash. I've hired him to drive my car from TX to NJ with my dogs in a couple weeks so I can fly back. He's thrilled, and I'm happy to have him do it. He'll be staying with us in NJ for several weeks to see the sights. He's young (mid 20's) and is experiencing wanderlust now that he's settled down in his home town of Albuquerque -- wants to be back on the road. PM me if you want to discuss.

Thanks everyone!  As the days approached to my trip down there, I got online and discovered a professional organization that listed movers. I got a company out of Atlanta. They were very good in their pick up. Hopefully they will do as good a job in delivery on this end.
