I have not had this surgery.
I once did play a surgeon in a 15 second segment of a Prudential TV commercial - decades ago. A colleague observed I was unrecognizable.
Does your son have unfounded expectations of the likely outcome? Is he unaware of what can go wrong?
What your son “wants” carries weight with an experienced surgeon, if your son knows what to expect. Who in his right mind would ever “want” to have surgery?
dick,
Now that was a fun job.
He's young and foolish, so thinks surgery will cure it all.
Anyone in their right mind would want surgery if they are in a lot of pain and the operation is likely to resolve the issue. Yes, there are always risks, but sometimes it's worth it.

My son wants to get this surgery, but I'm thinking his heel is not bad enough yet. Wondering if anyone has had it and how long you were laid up? Thanks
A quick Google says recovery ranges from 6 weeks to 3 months. Aside from the obvious inconvenience of being on crutches, your son will find that his leg muscles atrophy very quickly and he will need to take physical therapy and strength training very seriously.
