Guardian reporter body slammed by Montana Rep. nominee for congress

Now it's looking good for the Democrat to pick up that seat in tomorrow's special election.

do you really think GOP voters will hold this against their candidate?  If anything, he probably picked up another 5-10% of the vote.

Not if he's arrested. Police are interviewing witnesses right now, and there was a TV crew there.

this will be a good test of the limits of IOKIYAR.

My money is on Gianforte winning the election, even if he needs to be sprung on bail to vote tomorrow.

15% if he gets charged.

For sure.

Red blooded patriot puts down a liberal reporter from the lying press. Gianforte can now be nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In that case, maybe the body-slam was part of his election strategy.

Fox News reporters who witnessed the incident are doing the right thing. Their account completely contradicts the story given by Gianforte's spokesman.

This is fun to follow:

Missoulian rescinds Gianforte endorsement

...

But there is no doubt that Gianforte committed an act of terrible judgment that, if it doesn’t land him in jail, also shouldn’t land him in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He showed Wednesday night that he lacks the experience, brains and abilities to effectively represent Montana in any elected office.

And in case critics say this is just fake news from the liberal media, let us repeat one fact again: The eyewitness account of Gianforte’s actions came from a Fox News reporter.

We hope our fellow Montanans who haven’t already cast their ballots will say loud and clear at the polls Thursday that Greg Gianforte is not the man we want representing us in Washington. He does not represent Montana values and he should not represent us in Congress.

We’re putting our trust in your good sense.

I had to look up IOKIYAR. I found this 2007 piece from Paul Krugman, which is even more true now than it was then.

IOKIYAR and IACIYAD

 OCTOBER 11, 2007 5:06 PMOctober 11, 2007 5:06 pm

For years, progressives have responded to news of GOP scandals unpunished, abuses of power unchecked, and outrageous remarks ignored by the media with the acronym IOKIYAR – It’s OK if you’re a Republican.

But I think we need a complementary acronym: IACIYAD – it’s a crime if you’re a Democrat.

Adam Cohen of the Times’s editorial page has written several pieces on cases in which Democrats have been railroaded into jail on charges that either don’t stand up, or don’t sound like a crime. The most dramatic example is former Alabama governor Don Siegelman, “who is serving more than seven years in prison on dubious charges.” Cohen’s latest is here.

IACIYAD is a sort of double-entendre: it could mean that the same action that draws no punishment if you’re a Republican is a crime if a Democrat does it — in fact, the informant who provoked the charges against Siegelman also implicated Republicans, but they were never investigated. Or it could mean that just being a Democrat is a crime — and it’s clear that some people in the GOP would like that to be the case.

This stuff is truly scary; it’s the sort of thing you didn’t think could happen in America. But it has been happening; one shudders to think where we’d be if the political tide hadn’t turned against the Bushies.

Or as a constitutional lawyer once said to me, “If Bush wasn’t such a screwup, the Republic would already be over.”

The impact of the criminal charge might be lessened due to early voters who have already cast their ballots.

Trump said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose voters.  i believe he's right.  I don't think assaulting and body slamming a reporter will lose this guy any R support.  It's a sad situation.

Yeah, it may be too late.

Montana: share of all votes cast by mail

2017: ??
2016: 65.3%
2014: 60.2%
2012: 58.9%
2010: 47.5%
2008: 42.6%
2006: 29.5%
2004: 22%

Typical of the responses that I expected and now I often see:

Who cares? All this story indicates is that with enough provocation, anyone with any stones will finally provide the beat down that's deserved.

Montana is typically a Republican state at the federal level; President Donald Trump carried the state by 20 points in 2016. (Montana has only one House district, so today's race will decide the representative for the whole state.) It is also a state where you can vote by mail -- and, according to figures from the secretary of state, more than 250,000 ballots had already been returned as of Tuesday. That's roughly seven in 10 of all ballots election officials expect to be cast. (In the 2016 general election, just north of 507,000 votes were cast.)

CNN

to be honest, if the guy was a Democrat I'd probably still vote for him.  IMHO, what the GOP is doing is severely harming this country.  Looking at the big picture, I couldn't vote to send another Republican to the House.

Montana's an exception with only one rep, but if the courts don't continue striking down these jury-rigged districts, we'll continue to see nut jobs in the House.

There’s still some question,” he said, “as to whether the intrusion at the server was an insider job or whether or not it was the Russians.”

CNN’s John Berman interrupted. “I’m sorry,” he said. “The insider job – what are you referring to here? I hope it’s not this information that Fox News just refused to be reporting.”

“Again, there’s stuff circulating on the Internet,” Farenthold said.

Most honest thing about ol' Blake is that he looks as dumb as he is.

He's one cheeseburger away from a pre-existing condition.

I think he has a post-existing condition.

This guy won the election with slightly over 50%. Most of the votes were cast before the incident. Trump won the State by over 20%.

But 7% over the Democrat. People may hate Trump but there is no rush to embrace the Democrats. And the Democrats damn sure better figure out why that is.

I hope Ben Jacobs will bring a civil lawsuit against his attacker.  A combination of the violent attack and the violation of freedom of the press.  Sickening. Oh well, I can dream.

I think there should be a poll on what a Republican considers an impeachable offense. Just so we know what we're working with.

Helping poor people

Now the question is whether Stevens Tech will go ahead and name a building after him, or give back the $20 million...

“I made a mistake,” the congressman-elect said at his party in Bozeman. “Not in our minds!” yelled a supporter. David Weigel, who was there, reports that some in the crowd laughed.

-- After his comfortable six-point victory, Republican congressional leaders are making clear there will be no meaningful consequences for his behavior. “Elections are about choices and Montanans made their choice,” Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement this morning.

The Dem did a lot better than Hillary did six months ago. I believe the Libertarian candidate got 5%-6%.

Who knows what would have happened if 2/3 of the vote had not been already cast

It remains to be seen whether these folks are just jerks or actual fascists.

Because Trump is a Republican and Republicans usually win Republican districts.

But the point is still true that Democrats need better candidates, and better organization.
