For all the bitchin' and complaining and the parts we don't get right in SoMa, we really are heads above most other communities in our civic mindedness and community spirit. We do good here.
This has been home for 40 years. I still have an affection for my hometown of Newark. I will be here till the butcher cuts me down. And I won't make it easy for him. No where Pennsylvania? not in my life time.
I am a city boy..as I said , born and raised in Newark. I was 7 years old before I saw my first tree. It scared the life out of me.
I recently spent 10 weeks in Middleburgh, Pa. tending to an ill uncle. The area was lovely with soft rolling hills. The Mennonites drove their little buggys and ran their small markets. Their kids were polite and always offered to carry grocery bags for this gray haired one. It was a scene out of rural heaven.
And all the retirees in the area were content. But it was not my kind of content.
When you have grown with the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan area and you gear back to a place like Maple wood which still leaves the possibility for all kinds of activities.........when tipping cows just doesn't cut it for you......here i'll stay until the butcher cuts me down.

I think he's more saying that he likes it here.

I love it here too. But the implication that people in other towns wouldn't return a found driver's license is dubious. I lost my passport in Toronto and the guys who found it tracked me down to return it. I love Toronto too
I've pretty much had the same experience in four different residences in different states. People are basically responsible and caring in most places.

So true. Many years ago I lost my wallet in Manhattan. It fell out of my pocket sitting on a bus. The person who found it returned it.

I think we in SOMA are a little bit better at patting ourselves on the back
Well, here's another reason to love your town (alas, I'm no longer a SOMA resident). I was listening to NPR this morning and caught a news piece about the Village to Village Summer Camp program started by SOMA school teachers to connect local teens with Syrian refugee teens from Elizabeth during the summer. These teens should make you proud.

I think it is in response to some people who seem determined to bash the town. I know one woman who moved to Florida to "get away" from Maplewood because it was, in her words, "going to hell."

Two young girls just rang my doorbell and asked for my wife. I told them she wasn't home and they then handed me her drivers license and said they found it on Tuscan Rd.
She was out walking this morning and didn't realize she lost it.
You gotta love this town ...
