Microsoft released a patch for this in March, so if your Windows 10 is set to update automatically, or if you have accepted updates recently, then you should be OK. Also, if you use MalwareBytes premium (not free, but not super expensive), it also protects against it. There may well be other ways to be protected, but I know about these.
Finally found it. For anyone else who needs help here is what I did (this is for Windows 10, I don't know if the steps are the same on other versions).
Right click on the desktop
Click on "Display Settings" near the bottom
Click on "Home" in the upper left corner
Click on "Update and Security" near the bottom
This page should tell you if your system is up to date or not. Mine is apparently set for auto updates. If yours isn't then I can't help you since I have no idea of how to turn that on or off.

I'm reading about this global ransomware, and it isn't just hitting governments, but they said individuals also. There is a patch, but they also said that if your computer does self updates then you already have the patch. Being a non-tech person, how do I check if my computer self updates or not? If it helps, my computer is three years old and runs Windows 10.
