From Landmark To Eyesore: The Clock on Valley National Bank Maplewood - Fix It, Please!

Valley National Bank, Please fix the digital clock, you're a bank, you have the money. Seriously, it's not a good look.

It's a local landmark that's gone dark for too long.

Yeh, just like the old post office.

Big Ben doesn't have anything on it.

Maybe a landmark in the literal sense, like "turn left at the big digital clock".

the clock is a gorgeous representation of midcentury architecture.

Actually, late 20th. Century, Bush-American provincial. Differentiated from mid-century by the broken split designed on its column. This is to symbolize the breakage in U.S. world prestige after Bush's Iraq fiasco.

Why are you posting here?  Is that supposed to be funny? Just call the damn Home Office of Valley National.  1 800 522-4100  Sheesh.

Because this is a community conversation and it’s the sort of thing people talk about over the backyard fence.  No reason we can’t talk about what catches our eye here AND make that call.

Not an either/or...

if it hadn't been posted here, I'd never have noticed the clock wasn't working

Before it stopped working it kept the wrong time and temperature.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day... Unless it's digital and then not so much.

why isn't a digital clock right twice a day?  cool cheese

I think people think that anonymously posting here is a substitute for actually making the call/email.

A start to a more interesting and useful post might be "I noticed the bank clock has been non functional for a long time so I called the bank and they told me..." The original post in the thread is just kinda public whining.

If the clock still goes forward, then it’s always wrong. Or if it simply doesn’t work, then it doesn’t display anything.

I remember my parents' clock radio was digital ... It had the printed numbers that flipped to change the display every minute.

You mean like this?

I think I had a clock like this also.

terrific. Now I have I've Got You Babe stuck in my head..

This has been a continuing problem on and off for decades.  Apparently they have no sense of positive advertising or self respect.

People DO notice.  They may not always complain, but they get a negative sense of your business.

Maybe they do it on purpose. Person walks into the Bank and says "your clock is not working". Bank Officer says "Thank you so much for telling me. As long as you're here would you like to open an account"?

I would be happy to depend on my wristwatch to tell the time and the local banks offer interest on savings

and CD's higher than a fraction of a fraction

but if it's not digital and moves forward, it wouldn't be right twice a day either ...

you know what, forget it.  shock

for a long time, maybe a year or more, the temperature was off substantially, and consistently.  It showed a temperature about 7-8 degrees off from the real figure.  I can't now recall whether it was higher or lower.  But it was strange that it was always wrong by the same amount.

All you need to do is look around.

Example, Provident Bank 1.51% for up to 15,000 balance. No minimum balance. Just do 10 POS sales transactions each month and have at least one auto deposit or withdrawal.

ps - to quickly get our 10 POS in a month, we go to a supermarket and separate several items for multiple payments.

pps - the account also pays all ATM fees, no matter where.

I'm sure there are other banks.

Thanks for the information but I still think I could get a better return by leaving my money under a mattress

When I regularly took the last train out of Penn Station home after a night of work, it was always nice to be greeted in the 2 a.m. darkness by something else that was still operating.*

*Even if it was fallible. I’m usually off by at least 7 or 8 degrees in my job, too.

This has been true for 20 years or more.

You have a point, Mrs. Uburbs. If a digital clock is broken it won't display the time at all. Perhaps an 8 or maybe a series of 0's. A digital clock that is wrong but moving forward just needs to have the time reset.
