Free Electric Vehicle charging stations.

At King's Short Hills parking lot.  Since I don't have an E.V., I didn't stop to read if its just standard EV's or Tesla and others.

Anyways, the price is right.

The parking deck at Codey Arena has a load of them. Free for two hours

Hot take alert.

All for EVs. Why should charging be free?

Schumer just mentioned he would like free charging station across the country.  Anyone could drive from DC to Seattle for free.  I would opt to offer the charging at cost instead.

If electricity costs $0.13 per kilowatt-hour, charging an EV with a 200-mile range (assuming a fully depleted 66 kWh battery) will cost about $9 to reach a full charge.

But, free is a good start.

It shouldn't, but I guess it makes sense as an incentive to help and make them more popular in the early years of their adoption.

Wonder if there's federal money that pays for it.

ETA: has anyone ever figured out what the actual cost is per mile driven? Gasoline vs. electricity?

We charge at home (level 2 charge via special outlet), and I think my spouse calculated the fuel cost as less than half of gasoline.  Less maintenance also.

Guessing those free chargers are level 2 chargers, so the hook is the amount of money you are going to spend at Kings during the time it takes you to recharge...

Yes.  Every manufacturer does.  Each system is a little different when it comes to efficiency.  My Leaf got the equivalent of about 105 mpg.  Since fuel costs are not a constant the actual $ number changed.

I think we should generally pay to charge, but I also think the gas tax is way too low.

105 mpg?

Why are we even making internal combustion cars anymore?

Businesses and some municipalities routinely offer free (or nearly so) Level 2 EV charging. Level 2 is 220V, anywhere from 24 to 50 amp and will put between 25 and 30 miles of range per hour of charge time (YMMV) on a car. Studies show that drivers who take advantage of the free charging tend to stay at a business or shopping district for 90 minutes more than they originally intended and spend at the rate of $1 per minute. But the business/municipality has to ensure the spots are used by EVs, and then only while charging. If a location gets a reputation of routinely being ICEd or out of service, it will no longer attract EV drivers and the cost to set up the site is wasted. (EV drivers, check in on PlugShare when charging, or trying to. It helps us all.)

A PDF on charging speeds from Plug-in America (though current Teslas charge much faster than this PDF shows) :
