First day Virtual Learning Feedback

How was everyone's first day of Virtual learning? Having two children, one in Elementary and the other starting Middle School was quite the challenge. I must say, the elementary school had a pretty nice start, and flowed quite nicely.  MMS, for us it wasn't that smooth. I also found the orientation a bit much and all over the place.

Thoughts?

I have a 1st grader and 4th grader. I felt it went pretty well, but my 1st grader was getting tired by noon. It should be interesting when they got to 3:45 end times.

It's only the 2nd day. Everyone is nice and cozy. Give it a month and you'll be losing your minds.I must have received 20 emails from SOMSD. Too many emails and too many in the 11th hour. Geez!

My kids went to both MMS and SOMS. The latter is a much warmer, friendlier and more organized school. The princ. is wonderful.

Three year old family member had his first day at Montrose (virtual only).  He looked so happy in the photos his parents sent.  Whether this was due to going to grown up school or the extensive screen time virtual school provides, I don't know.  As others have posted, we will see how things progress over time.

OMG! Same here! Way too many emails! I tried to forward them to my middle schooler but she's unable to receive emails from out of District addresses, which is understandable but I feel thrown in the middle. Some emails are helpful BUT a lot of them I find myself passing them on to her. Feels like a messaging service. LOL

I’m guessing we are being copied on many emails that go to our kids (at least at the middle school level).  I’m planning to verify this and see if I can change to a daily digest format in Canvas.

oh oh

 That could do it.  grin

DYAC, that was supposed to be Dunkin Donuts  tongue wink

Bummer. I was wondering where Dublin Donuts was!

As was I. What an odd feeling, to get that excited at the possibility of a new donut source. (Thank you, Covid.)

I thought the donuts kept "dublin."  As soon as one disappeared, the next one would appear.

This would be the kind of magical donut I could support.

So far my daughter has done well with distance learning. Given the late change in plans from hybrid to all-virtual I think it has gone fairly smoothly in our experience.

In my opinion the teachers are doing well adapting their curriculum to the new system. From my experience as a corporate educator there's a lot of work that has to go into successful online learning.

Our school still offers the option of in person or distance learning.  We were doing in person but due to rising numbers, and one student testing positive, we decided to switch to distance.

So how was our first day of distance learning?  My fifth grader and 2nd grader did just fine.  My kindergartener on the other hand...

I’d know that someone in my house would end up climbing the walls, so if I had to choose ...

My 17-year-old nephew (100 percent distance learning) has said if given the choice, he’d rather go to school 7 days a week than homeschool 5. His grades are mostly A’s either way, but he desperately craves the social part. As, I imagine, the rock climber pictured will, too.

That is why when we were given the choice I chose in person.  Our school is doing half days so there is no mixing in the cafeteria.  And I chose to not use busing to avoid that potential exposure.

I knew it wouldn’t last the whole year, but I figured as much in person time I could give them would be good.   But with the rising numbers I felt the risks heavily outweighed the benefits.  In September the state had a couple of hundred new cases a day.
