Personally, I don’t feel comfortable participating in a uncertain situation where my children are test dummies so to speak
Then don’t.
Your concern is understandable. If it helps, the number of COVID transmissions traced by to classrooms where students and teachers are wearing masks is minimal. The only problems have been in states that do not have mask mandates.
For example, Summit had students in for half a day wearing masks last year and they had no confirmed cases of classroom transmission. They've been in school for full-days since August 30 and there has not been an outbreak.

Lunch is the most challenging time. I don't know what is the plan is at your children's school, but that is what I would be most concerned about.
I wish everyone a safe and healthy start to the school year.

Thank you for your comment as it’s been one of the only ones that came off as human. The lunch protocol for lunch are as follows: The children will be eating outside, on a blanket and or towel from home. Or the option to bring your kid home for lunch is available. Not sure what they will do on the days the weather is not permitting.
In the middle school, when the weather does not allow for outdoor lunch, they will be using the auditorium as a second lunchroom, and possibly some classrooms.

Who else is nervous sending their children back to school? Especially the elementary aged students?
