Fios problems

Anyone else having problems this morning. It is being very slow for me, and is having trouble getting into certain websites (though it is fine for others.)

Our FIOS is often slow. Most often after a severe rain. Frequently I'll get these pop up ads on the TV asking if we want to upgrade to a faster speed. Nope. I don't think it works for all people in certain areas.

Yep. Ironically, while I'm able to bounce around this place without any issues, it's taking forever for the Ookla speed test site to load. Fun with cookies, etc.

Yes. It's really bad today. I've been having problems on and off for a few weeks now. Thought it was my computer. But my phone is fine. I don't get it

fios is not working currently on any google sites and facebook as well

We are having the same issues with our computer. Oddly, however, my Kindle fire using wi fi from the same fios box seems fine.

yeah everything works fine on the devices. just the desktop/laptop. chrome is also acting strange. it must be a google/fios/desktop thing

Wi-fi has been slow for me this morning on my phone, tablet and desktop. I'm trying to test a website redesign so it's quite frustrating but it seems to be picking up a little now.

Called Fios, I got this recorded message:

"we are experiencing an outage in your area that may affect your fios service. our technicians are working on a resolution.."

This is happening all across NY and NJ right now.

My problem is with gmail. Webpage not available. But I can read NYT online, do banking, get to MOL. Weird.

ETA: I am on my desktop and using Chrome, so, yes, I concur with that configuration presenting the problem.

Goggle search on pc not working well. Could it be an issue with Google browser?

I've been trying to get into speedtest.net for 30 minutes with no luck. Yet I'm connected to my desktop at work with no issues. If anyone wanted to know what life would be like without net neutrality, we're getting a small taste.

Just got off the phone with FIOS. Outage/spottiness covering much of NYC. I was the first call in NJ. They don't have a clue--might be a backbone router or something even bigger.

Chrome does act strange with FIOS, doesn't it? Chrome is usually my go-to but lately, I've been using Safari. Still a bit slow but not as many kooky issues as I have with Chrome.

And now....can't open Google Calendar. Great.

It looks like the problem must be with one or more of Verizon's peering partners. Some sites you can get to fine, and other sites have what I'd call at best 'limited' functionality. Speed to Verizon doesn't seem to be down. Oddly, even the sites I can't get to load ping (ping=respond to test requests) fine, even with larger packet sizes (it's not uncommon for sites to be responsive with the default small pings and for problems to not show up until you deal with larger sizes that are more representative of real data. I don't have any tools on my home computer to do tests via HTTP (web traffic) instead of ICMP (what ping uses), so I can't tell if it's just web traffic that is being slowed down.

So, the problem isn't you. It's definitely at Verizon. Probably will just have to be patient, but at least it seems pretty major so you know they'll be working on it intently whereas if it was just a house or a town they might not be as interested. Probably some bad routers at their peering locations. Peering is swiching to a different Internet backbone. The Internet is not a single entity, but a collection of backbones. So in effect the 'Internet' is just a figment of your imagination!

OHHHH what a relief, so good to hear this. We got a new FIOS router last night and thought we F**** it up as usual.

HA! I feel you. This reminds me of an interview I saw on TV right after a big earthquake in LA. Some shellshocked guy told the reporter, "I don't know what happened; I hit my garage door opener and all hell broke loose."

When I couldn't get to my GMail I went to Google to see if there was any news or was it just me. Of course, I couldn't get to Google either. Everything was fine on my phone and at work. LOL

I was just sent a link to HuffPo which refuses to open.

Slow as molasses this morning. I'm getting better speeds using my T-Mo phone as a hotspot. Hope thy get it sorted out soon.

It's really half-fast.

Getting this message on some sites: Gateway Timeout: can't connect to remote host

Could be resolved. I just made it onto the speedtest site for the first time and clocked up 58/19.

^ Love THIS ad!!! Bravo! ^

My FIOS TV decided to download new software this morning in the last 2 seconds of the Coney Island hot dog eating contest. And there was an upset This is in-American!

Speaking of FIOS - what are folks thinking about the Quantum upgrade (including new router.) Worth the extra $15/month or just more hype?

I'm fairly confident I will go to prison as the result of a FIOS-induced fit of rage.

Our FIOS goes down every stinking night between 8-9pm.

Every night. For the past two months.

I have to reset the battery and wait for everything to reboot.

Yes, I have replaced the battery. Yes, Verizon has been to my house and replaced the box. Yes, I have another appointment this week where I will wait 5 hours for them to show up and "fix" the problem only to have it happen again.

Yes, I will most likely be institutionalized if I have to have another hour-long phone call with the FIOS people.

Gah!!!!!

Ms_cooper,

Document your outage times (periods) and demand a rebate/reduction in monthly charges for each service.

My husband spent some time on the phone with FIOS today since our box has been shutting off several times a day. He learned 2 key things.

- this is a common problem with a specific box model. If your box is 6 years or older, the box probably needs to be replaced.

-Quantum is not the deal it seems. If the rep explained things correctly, they market that you can record 3 or more shows at a time, but that costs more than the quoted price. So you subscribe to Quantum for an extra $10/month and if you record 3 shows at a time you get bumped up to another tier which costs an extra $20-30/month.

Caveat emptor - make sure you ask questions and get answers in writing.
