Murders per capita would probably make more sense, if that was not used in the ranking.
I don't think it makes sense as a statistic, given how extraordinarily rare it is for any one person to murder someone.
The crack crew at RoadSnacks refined the figures to account for not only “the murders per person” but also “the raw numbers of murders.” It then “averaged” the “two scores.”
The math is unassailable.
I'm torn between which is worse, the writing or the methodology.  It's probably a tie.

Don't forget the "expert" photo selection to illustrate Maplewood.

I'm kind of puzzled how someone can declare towns the "murder capitals" for a year that hasn't even started yet.  Especially when they are using data from 2017.  But whatever.  Let's recall what happened in Maplewood nearly two years ago:
3 of the 4 homicides in Maplewood in 2017 were committed in January of that year in one event.  By persons who traveled to Maplewood from Egg Harbor, NJ.

More details about that terrible crime (for which two of the murderers were caught and convicted, btw).

The triple homicide took place in January 2017, when Mays, Davis and "an unknown co-conspirator" went into a residence at 38 Van Ness Court in Maplewood looking for drugs and cash, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The three men allegedly knew the resident, Michael Davis, 45, prosecutors said.

The trio shot and killed Davis in his upstairs bedroom along with Roshana Kelson, 30, of Paterson. They also "tortured" Lance Fraser, 44, of Newark, before shooting and killing him as well, prosecutors said.

In other words, in a house committed by people who knew and sought out the victims.  So "Venturen" is telling us that that we need to exclude certain people from moving to Maplewood.  I don't have to guess what criteria "Venturen" may be in favor of using.

Urban Dictionary defines "Venturen" as "he who farts in elevator and then exits".

 So, a Cowboys fan.

(P.S. That’s the South Lyon of Eagles fan casting.)

Dave/ Jamie,  can we do something to get rid of posters who spew such racism?  It's not adding to the appeal of MOL. Maybe a time out if not an outright ban?

And before anyone starts harping about free speech, I'm not suggesting that the government punish Venturen, so action on Dave/Jamie's part would not infringe on the OP's constitutional rights.

I would be ok if the thread disappeared.

I think threads like this should stay up forever.  The OP and the idiotic article both got a pretty good smackdown from the responses.

I tend to agree with this.  At least we're not one of the worst NYC suburbs:

(Paterson looks familiar)

The map of Morristown there places it on the border with Canada.

Ottawa is the nearest city on the map.

They seem to think they are writing about Morristown, NJ but the data suggests they are actually referencing information about Morristown, NY.   Maybe.  Or maybe all the numbers are just made up.

Holy cow, that might be the most incompetent "news" site in the world.
