Don't talk about guns, it's too political

Twelve dead in Virginia Beach.  When will it end?

Not in our lifetimes, certainly. We are infected with the deep sickness of gun fetishism. It's as much of being an American as racism is.

Anyway, any talk about guns these days is just nonsense. There is no law - no "gun control" - being proposed by anyone that would even make a dent in our problem.

We first need a Supreme Court willing to roll back the craziness of prior decisions. Then we need to buy back as many guns as we can. At the same time there needs to be frank discussion about how there are two kinds of gun owners - the old-line hunters and target-shooters who are responsible about their ownership, and then the millions and millions of lunatics who buy arsenals because they think they need to protect themselves from ... something.

Until we start treating the latter form of ownership (and all of the ancillary gun behaviors) as a sickness, or at least a highly disapproved of behavior, we won't get anywhere.

Cory Booker has made gun control a major part of his campaign. I think this article covers it fairly well.

Apparently, so has Eric Swalwell. Maybe when their generation's turn comes, movement will happen.

I like his "end legal immunity for gun manufacturers". I think that in and of itself could dramatically change things.

the really sad thing is that epidemiological studies point to a very strong link between lax state gun laws and a high rate of suicide among white males. Gun owners kill themselves at an alarming rate. The number of suicides dwarfs the number of people killed in mass shootings. It's a national crisis that hardly anyone talks about. Certainly they aren't talking about it at a level commensurate with the size of the problem.

A hypocrisy of our political system, especially the Republicans.

Their decrying of regulation, their claim a capitalist free market absent of governmental oversight is best. While at the same time supporting laws like the immunization of manufacturers.

You can be sure a proposed a regulation or law that protects the public at the expense of business would have these politicians decrying with a mantra that socialists, communists and liberals are ruining the country.

They say that about every initiative they don't like. But I think younger generations increasingly don't have such a visceral negative reaction with the words socialist and communist anymore. So who really cares what they call us. I know I don't.

Speaking of Eric Swalwell on guns, a good test of a policy, is to see how crazy it makes the opposition.

How's this from a site called gunpowder. A few reactions from Tucker as well.

Swalwell seems to be the only person who's kind of on the right track.

interesting article in the times regarding gun ownership

He had a pretty good town hall on CNN.
