Does Maplewood require a permit to install a shed?

I can't seem to find the answer online.

I looked into this SEVERAL years ago.

It was my conclusion, at the time, that a permanent structure requires a permit; whilst a non-permanent structure did not.

To the best of my understanding, a permanent structure is one which is attached to footings. If a structure is situated on the ground, without footings; it's non-permanent.

If you haven't already looked through the Township's ordinances, please review:

Hope this helps.

When my mom wanted to put up a short wall edging her yard using large landscaping bricks from Home Depot she found out that according to the town if she uses mortar then it is a wall, but the same bricks, in the same formation, and at the same height, were considered landscaping if she did not use mortar.

However, in regards to the shed question.  A neighbor put up one, non-permanent.  But a neighbor complained and they were forced to move it since it was within a certain number of feet from the property line.  Now it is possible that the person who came out was wrong, as I do know of someone who had a recent incident where code stopped a painting crew from painting the interior of their home because he mistakenly thought that a permit was needed for painting.  So unless it is one of those easily moved half height Rubbermaid sheds you use for trash cans, I'd check with town hall first, and get the name of who you spoke with in case you hear something different from someone who later comes out to your property

On second thought, check with town hall even if it is a half height trash can shed.  My mother put one of those up and then had to take it down because a neighbor complained.

The takeaway from all of this is that one phone call tomorrow morning will get you the real answer.  They are good people.

It seems to me that all rules don’t always apply or they get changed. Some large homes are being built that take up too much of the property.Feel sorry for the neighbors. That goes for garages as well.

We have a shed on cinder blocks.  My recollection is it needed to be a certain distance from our property line but no permit.  Agree that a call to Town Hall is your best source of info.
