Want to move our fridge (with ice/water dispenser) to the other side of the kitchen. To temporarily disconnect the water line tube until we can get a plumber to run a longer line...Do we have to call a plumber for this too?
You will need to find the saddle valve in the basement and turn it off. Then you can disconnect it. It is not too hard to do. You may require drilling a new hole to accommodate the location.
a) go to the basement and find the valve (as mentioned above, probably a saddle valve). It looks like a parasite that glommed on to your existing copper pipe. Shut it off.
b) disconnect the line from the back of the fridge. The ones I've seen use a simple compression fitting (nut).
You may be pleasantly surprised; sometimes there's extra hose coiled at the back of the fridge. If the new location isn't too far away, you may be able to reroute the whole shebang by just drilling a new hole up from the basement. I'd rate this operation as a 3 on 10 in the handyperson (to be gender neutral) scale.
The small saddle valve may be under your kitchen sink rather than the basement. Look around it will be the valve with the small copper or plastic tube going into the side and having a "T" type handle.
Thanks everyone. It IS in the basement crawl space connected to the copper pipe. I found it and shut it off with no problem. The fridge is moved and we'll need to call someone to extend the new line for us.
