It WAS funny. The answer (question, in Jeopardy parlance) was, What is a gumshoe? The category was something like Words With Trees, and the clue was, Nickname for a Detective.

The category had something to do with trees. The answer was “nickname for a detective.” The 12 time winner bartender paused and cringed and then said “what is a....dick?” Alec replied, “I don’t know anything about a dick tree.”
I think it may have been the funniest moment in Jeopardy history.
The answer was gum tree.
