Curb appeal ???

Been living in Maplewood for 11 years now and it seems it like the curbs around town are dug up and replaced every other year or so. Anyone else notice this ?

To me, a waste of money and traffic aggravation -- especially what's going on in the village.

Isn't the work being done in the Village to make it more handicap accessible?

The bump-outs are to make it more safe for pedestrians.

A few different things going on in parallel.

First, the bump outs in certain areas of town to promote traffic calming and make it safer for pedestrians.  Second, making sidewalks more handicapped accessible.  And third, whatever the water utility decides it wants to do.

I approve of handicapped accessibility improvements.

Have there been pedestrian accidents in the village? Traffic goes pretty slowly on Maplewood Ave. as it is.

^^^ Yes. The 15 mile per hour posted speed limit is seldom adhered to or enforced.  An even bigger problem from the pedestrian's point of view is the illegal parking, often in the crosswalk itself or parking too close to the crosswalk thus blocking view of the pedestrian crossing to on-coming motorists and view of on-coming motorists to pedestrians trying to cross the street.  Add to that motorists driving the wrong way on Inwood and cars making the illegal left turn on Maplewood Avenue and you have major pedestrian safety problems in the Village.

I agree that illegally parked cars are a major safety problem in the village. Everyone knows who the major offenders are but what is being done? And how will these new curbs help?

With the increase in bump outs, illegal parking may become even more of a problem than it is now.  An enforcement blitz held on a random schedule may be the best way of dealing with this problem.
