Bring back the Cabaret with the snacks and comedians. That's was my kid's favorite act by a long-shot (he was never a big fan of First Night). I kinda liked it too --- we are not magic show/circus/crafts kind of people.

Our best M/SO First Night experience was the one a few years ago at SOMS. My kid adored the Simple Gifts folk group (whom we've gone to see elsewhere since as a result), the classical harpist, and the puppet theater, and really liked the the brass ensemble and violinist too. It was well-run, and lots of fun.

Other M/SO ones since were comparative disappointments. Not only in terms of the acts, but the logistics. For example, the one at MMS was completely ruined by the building's heating system being on a blazing rampage such that the whole place was easily at least 85 F the whole time. Even stripping down as far as we could and hanging out near open windows didn't cut it. So since we were all totally miserable to the point that we couldn't pay attention to the acts (and the crying children. ill-appearing seniors, and complaints from others told us we weren't alone), we left very early and saw very little. And the food has always been mediocre at best -- an issue I see you've definitely solved for this year! oh oh

While M/SO was dark for a few years, we've gone to the huge First Night in Morristown. Loved that they did fireworks (a definite want for First Night for us) at 9 and 12. And they had just phenomenal (for the most part; there was one notable absolute dud) music, dance, and other acts.

For us, any and all well-done world music, dance, theater, and puppetry -- e.g. African, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Indian, Cajun, American Folk, Dixieland, etc. -- go to the top of the list. Good ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, and period music and dance are up there for us too.

Also, we love it best when it's stuff we wouldn't otherwise see in this area at other events during the year. As cool as the lizard guy is, for example, we see him at just about every summer festival etc. around here, so the shine has worn off a bit for us. And at least for now, circus isn't so much our thing either.
