COVID-19 Sanitary Practices

An awful lot of the transmission comes from contact with the eyes.  If people were serious about avoiding this they would be wearing lab goggles, not masks.

 Both.

 Onion goggles??

Speaking of googles,  today's Google doodle is both informative and instructive.

I'm not sure what to do about a spouse who thinks as long as he's home all day, he doesn't need to wash his hands for 20 seconds before preparing food, or at other times.  This evening he washed his hands for six seconds and then stuck them in a bowl of lettuce to make a salad.  His reasoning is "if one of us has the virus, the other is bound to get it."  The think is, someone from his workplace  has it, and so he should be erring on the side of caution.

Still think you don't need a mask? Think again.

Live influenza virus was measurable from the air behind all surgical masks tested. The data indicate that a surgical mask will reduce exposure to aerosolised infectious influenza virus; reductions ranged from 1.1- to 55-fold (average 6-fold), depending on the design of the mask.

In many Asian countries, everyone is encouraged to wear masks, and the approach is about crowd psychology and protection. If everyone wears a mask, individuals protect each other, reducing overall community transmission. The sick automatically have one on and are also more likely to adhere to keeping their mask on because the stigma of wearing one is removed.

Especially, considering silent carriers:

With the current coronavirus, researchers are also finding that there are more asymptomatic cases than were known early on in the pandemic. Classified data from the Chinese government that was reported in the South China Morning Post indicated that up to a third of all people who tested positive for the coronavirus could have been silent carriers.

This sums it up.

“If everyone in the community wears a mask, it could decrease transmission,” Dr. Fishman said. “But unfortunately I think that we don’t have enough masks to make that effective policy in the U.S.”

So, just lie. Tell the public they don't need them.

 Thank you.

This anti-mask nonsense has undoubtedly made things worse here.

I read that China is now manufacturing 200 million surgical masks and 600,000 N95 masks a day.

We're desperately depending on China to help us out:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Trade Representative’s office in recent days granted exclusions from import tariffs for dozens of medical products imported from China, including face masks, hand sanitizing wipes and examination gloves, filings with the agency showed on Friday.

Like tariffs are going to make a difference. We'll buy whatever we can from China, tariffs or not. With the Trump admin its always about money.
