Cornbread restaurant and bar is progressing

Major work is happening on the Cornbread building.  It will be a bar, restaurant, and bakery. I can't wait for it to be done.

So which new bar will open up first? Cornbread, the old Highland place or the new place in the Clarus building?

Where in Maplewood is this?

will it be a  REAL bakery or more of a dessert shop?

I lack a sweet tooth  but like a nosh with my coffee.

Was unable to get a savory on my last three visits to Able Baker

I'm curious how they're able to be a bar. Thought all the liquor licenses were spoken for.

Springfield Ave, near the intersection with Boyden (between Boyden and Burnett).

Hathaways had a bar license.  I assume that license was transferred when the property was sold but I don't know for sure.

There will not be a bar.

It was going to try and use a permit which allowed the sale of NJ beer and wine, but that didn't work-out.

All the licenses in town are spoken for.

From what I understand, it's gonna be more of a soul food place ...

This is an incredible story.   Adenah Bayoh, the woman behind this restaurant came to America at 13, an orphaned refugee from the war in Liberia.  Her first job, when she was old enough to work, was at an Ihop .  She went to high school in Newark, and put herself through college.  She opened her own IHOP in Irvington on the border of Newark and has since built a multi-million dollar real estate empire.  About 10 to 12 years ago I read her story when she opened the Irvington IHOP and I have been there a number of times since ( but not in the last few years....)  It was quite an experience.  The service and food quality was impressive.   It is by far, the best IHOP I have ever been to.  I cant wait to try Cornbread.

Noooooo! Are you sure, I really wanted a new bar on that side of town.

I am guessing with a name like cornbread it would be savory.

She is a machine.  The iHop in Irvington is very well run and successful.

I think I want to support this restaurant just from reading about her background!  Her story is inspiring and I hope she does well with this new venture!

Thanks for sharing Adenah's story.  It's so remarkable if it was a work of fiction you'd scoff at how unbelievable it is.  I wasn't aware she's basically redeveloping Irvington!  We should all be thankful Trump will ensure dangerous terrorists like her won't be able to sneak in anymore (sorry if my cheap shot brings down this happy thread).

I've been wondering what Cornbread would be, with the combination of a bakery and bar hard to grasp.  Looking forward to giving it a try.  Hope Top Fried Chicken & Ice Cream across the street lasts in that space, will firm a nice little hub of unique food.

When you described where her IHOP was, I was a little confused.  It's actually much closer to Maplewood (.6 miles) than Newark (1.2 miles).  And I definitely agree it's one of best IHOPs around.

I am thinking it will be a restaurant first that happens to sell baked goods, but we will see.  I am still really bummed about the bar not happening, maybe they can get the Highland place license.
