Moving to a WO townhouse soon, and trying to line up cable service. Seems like Comcast or Dish are the two options (a shame, since we've been happy with our SO Verizon Fios service). Any thoughts? Is Dish quality better these days in bad weather? Wasn't at all thrilled with quality of online chat with Comcast rep today, and prices seemed very high.
I don't know where in WO you are moving, but we have found Comcast service to be very reliable.
DirecTV? I'm happy with my service
We have DirecTV, and it sucks. It disconnects from the Internet all the time, and the service does, indeed, vanish when cloud cover is heavy. When we move in a few weeks I'll be going back to some flavor of cable.
I adored FIOS and mourn the fact that we can't get it up here on a regular basis.
Yes, I agree. As much as I bitch about Verizon's billing and customer service people, I will miss the service when I move. My choice is Comcast or Direct TV. I think I'll try Comcast first, at least for the first year or two where I can take advantage of a new customer discount.
Apologies - it is Direct TV, and not Dish, that partners with Verizon. Supposedly low Comcast rate of 89.99 per month for triple play seemed to vanish when monthly charges were added for multiple tv boxes, a modem, and a sports package needed for things like MSG and YES networks. And I was less than thrilled that I could find no references to these channels being included on Comcast site, even at links representative sent me to, though I was repeatedly ensured that he could see them on his screens and perhaps the links hadn't been updated!!
Yes, Verizon is why we ended up with DirecTV. The options in our part of CT are few and far between and disappointingly bad. When we move in two weeks we will have somewhat more in terms of selection, but still no FIOS. *sigh*
And I agree about the alleged "deals." As soon as we add in a handful of select cable channels because I want to be able to watch "Game of Thrones" and "Outlander," the price is mysteriously enormous.

But this happens with every cable company, even FIOS.

That is true (that it happens with every company). But there is an alternative, and I'm giving it some thought. There are now providers who will work exclusively through the Internet, and you can get a huge range of channels, including cable. And some of the cable channels will let you sign up online only. So maybe I should just get a very basic package for the TV and Internet service, and add a few other things piecemeal online? I haven't done a lot of research yet, but I know there is a fair amount of buzz about people giving up their cable subscriptions in favor of going to the Internet. Just like people are giving up their landline phones in favor of cell service. Worth considering, if only I felt like I knew what I was doing.
I believe a product should just work. Not kind of work. Sometimes. I've tried Fios and Optimum and both have been disappointing. I have come to the conclusion that Vose Avenue in South Orange is the black hole of cable and internet.
