College Admissions Scandal

Hence my comment about making someone like that reapply as a transfer student.  If she was true to her word and has a 1.9 GPA none of these schools would accept her as a transfer.
On the other hand maybe some of these kids have been working hard, carrying high grades and being involved in meaningful extracurricular activities.  If they were unaware of how they got in and proved themselves worthy, should they get another chance?

each case will be different depending on the circumstances of how much the students participated in the fraud, but perhaps more importantly what the honor code is at each school.

This scandal appears to include supporters of Democrats as well as Republicans -- with some donors giving to both parties.

Everything in the World doesn't have to do with partisan politics.

TMZ reporting that both daughters of Lorie Loughlin will withdraw from USC.

Smart decision.

I would imagine they are looking for large rocks to crawl under.

Why should the innocent be booted?
They were admitted based on fraudulent/forged information.

And college applicants are expected to have read their own applications and attested to their accuracy. Duh.

I can’t be very sympathetic to anyone who doesn’t know what is in his/her college application (or claims not to know).

If the fraud in a particular student's case involved any part of the application package, I suspect the student will get booted, and should be.  "Mommy didn't show me what we mailed" isn't going to cut it.

Doubt it.   It’s not like their parents are going to cut them off or otherwise punish them.  And I’d bet that the world they live in will consider this cool.

Isn't this what Jared's daddy did? Really, how is this any different?

You know, the name Jared has taken quite a hit in recent years.  When I first read this post, I immediately thought of the kiddie porn guy from Subway.  It took me a minute to realize that cubby was really referring to Twitler's crooked son in law.

Growing up in California, USC was famous as a school where rich people could buy their kids admission.  I guess they must have really come up in the world in the last two decades if people are actually shocked about this.

I would tend to doubt that a single one of them is really a progressive of the AOC/Sanders variety.  Which is the accusation I was seeing right wingers making on FB.

 Yeah, no.

The campus today is far different from the one students encountered decades ago when the school was better known as a home for the children of Los Angeles’s wealthy elite, snidely referred to as the “University of Spoiled Children.” In the 1990s, the university began an extensive overhaul, building on its reputation as an athletic powerhouse and ranking academically among the nation’s top-tier schools.

So, yes.

we visited USC six years ago and afterwards my then 17 year old told us he wasn't going to apply because he didn't like the vibe. He got an attitude from the tour that it was a place full of entitled preppies.

Sometimes there is something to be said for paying attention to "vibe."

Target needs to drop kick their Mossimo brand. It’s crap anyway.

I have a friend who said he would check out the parking lot when visiting colleges with his son to see what kinds of cars students drove - new Audis & BMWs vs. Toyotas and Hyundais.

They already had and they issued some statement/tweet saying they had not talked to the Mossimo guy in over a decade.

 MAPSO in other words.

In my day, you couldn’t tell who had driven a parked car, and the lots that students used were so far from the heart of campus that only the most intrepid visitor would’ve seen them.

If the above article is factual, why don’t wealthy families just open their wallets up front — assuming their kids meet academic standards?

Some parents lose their minds when it comes to certain things - what college they go to, youth sports, etc.  I wouldn't look for too much logic behind their actions.

Because it’s only an advantage, not a guarantee, and only certain colleges take it into account.

A tweet on the $500,000 bribe:

"For $500k, my kid better be getting into Hogwarts"

not to mention, I'm pretty sure none of those kids met the academic standards for admission

Dr. Dre celebrates his daughter getting into USC 'on her own before deleting the post when it was revealed that he had donated $70 million to the college.

At what point does USC just admit that they aren't a real university and close their doors?

This scam has been going on since 2011.  I wonder if they are going to get the full list of participants or if they are just going to end it here with the 50 they arrested and publicized.

this was predicted years in advance.

Who in their right mind would donate that amount of money to get their kid into a school?  Surely you could donate a fraction of that to get your kid into a selective school somewhere?  Is 7 mill chump change now?

Dre’s daughter was a sixth grader at the time of the donation. Seems a little early to be deciding that a child will need tens of millions of dollars’ worth of help to get into a specific university, if that’s what we’re meant to believe.

It’s one thing to conclude that the money had something to do with her acceptance, which is a good argument against Dre’s Instagram post. It’s another thing to assume an ulterior motive for the donation.
