coat drive postponed due to bad weather

I really do get it, but when you postpone a coat drive because of bad weather, it appears you don't know what the coat drive is for. Also, the subject line said canceled although it is merely postponed.

I'm still on the Maplewood's town mailing list even though I moved out. I haven't been able to figure out how to get off.

It *appears* as though they don’t understand, but they do.  They had scheduled it for November, a time when it is normally starting to get cold, but we haven’t yet hit the dangerous low temps we normally see in January and. February.  We had an unusually bad snow that left streets gridlocked, motorists stranded, and some school children in West Orange even had to stay at the school overnight.

I understand that coats are badly needed for at risk populations.  Over the years I’ve given several to my neighbor who takes them straight down to Penn Station to give directly to the homeless.  It is a real need.  But they also needed to keep the street cleared for clean up and to balance the safety of the people who would be coming to the drive.

Maybe you meant it as a joke to point out the irony, and I may be coming down a little hard on you.  But it kind of looked like a jab at Maplewood, which while far from perfect, still holds a place in my heart and likely will for the rest of my life.  Maplewood Township does make mistakes, but I don’t think postponing the cost drive during a messy clean up effort was one of them

There is a good point being made here though, cancelling the event for bad weather leaves those in need having to make due without

With weather patterns changing the way they are (we all remember the freak October snow storm) the organizers should think about the possibility of moving the drive to earlier in the year.  Too early and people aren’t seriously thinking of cold weather, but too late and they run the risk of adverse weather events like the one we just had.  I’m not sure where the sweet spot would be weather-wise to ensure participation but also lessen the likelihood of safety related cancellations

I think you can know what a coat drive is for, and also know that you want to encourage people to donate on a day when they can safely do so.

When Mr. Reingold was a Maplewoodian, he would have strongly disagreed with someone who made the comment he made.  Does being a New Yorker change one like that?  cheese

Forgive me for expressing myself clearly. It was clearly the right thing to postpone, but it just gave me a chuckle because of the appearance of stupidity. There was no actual stupidity. Maplewood is a class act.
