Good idea, and it is needed because the docking stations aren't as reliable as most of us wish. Last night, I took a very short ride on Citibike, and I visited FOUR docking stations. All of the empty slots were not accepting returns. At the fourth, someone took a bike out, so I was able to use the slot he emptied. With all the time it took to hunt down a working slot, I could have walked instead of riding. Oh well. It was an adventure, and the weather was nice.
@Tom_Reingold, Did you use the CitiBike App?
It has been much more accurate this year displaying "real time" quantities of empty spots and available bikes at each location on the map.
kmk, I have an ancient iphone 4, and it has become painfully slow. I'm deferring an upgrade for as long as I can. The result is that pulling out that app may not save me time, because it takes two or three minutes before it starts displaying anything useful.
For what it's worth, I found another app I like a little better, called WABA, and it stands for "Where a bike at?" I feel like it should say, "Where a bike at, bro?" *emoticon*
I have seen some improvements to Citibike, though bike availability where and when needed remains an issue. I work on the east side of Manhattan by the UN, and no bikes are available starting around 5:30 to 6 pm. Service is decent only at 31st and 8th by Penn Station because Citibike has a nearby warehouse and guys on bikes replenish at that location.
