Cape May Accommodations for a long weekend in September?

I'm contemplating the Rosh Hashana long weekend school break (since we are not Jewish) and wondering about getting a rental home or hotel room(s) within walking distance of the beach and bikeable to birding areas. Any advice/suggestions from the Cape May veterans?

It might be too early, but some condos/homes offer long weekend rates in the off season. If you Google "cape may condos" it should get you on the right track.

One of the best things about Cape May (to me anyway) is that from 4-8 there are happy hours at various places and you can eat delicious seafood and drink whatever you like, REALLY cheap. I mean, really cheap.

We DO have kids but they are older (17 and 20) and we certainly won't be having any more grin

If you stay on the Western side of town, it's possible to walk to the bird sanctuary. Maybe a 30-min walk along the beach...

Location is MUCH more important to us than decoration. So, while those old inns are beautiful, all of that would pretty much be wasted on our family. That being said, we do prefer comfortable beds (at least one a queen or king) and would like to have a decent TV and WiFi if possible. And we'd really like to be within a couple of blocks from the beach. I think we'd probably prefer a beach house or one of those old-fashioned housekeeping hotels that have kitchens and multiple bedrooms, if they still exist.

Which part of town is walkable (or bikeable) to the bird sanctuary?

The Inn at Cape May is right across from the beach and they have a big porch with rocking chairs to hang out on. Not sure it's walkable to the bird sanctuary though, since I thought that was at the other end of town. I think people usually rent bikes to see that (but it's been a few years since I've been there).

Another vote for Inn at Cape May. We have gotten the suite on the second floor sort of over the entrance and it's great for us. Also you get a dining credit and their restaurant is great.

Check out the Montreal Inn- beachfront and reasonable with kitchens- very 1950's. The birding center, concrete ship and lighthouse are situated more in West Cape May - where you might catch a glance of the town's most 'famous' chef Colameco ( but do not ever approach ;-) Go to Harpoon Henry's in Lower Township - it should still be open to see the best Jersey sunset over the bay.

A second vote for Montreal Inn - we're heading there in a couple weeks as we have done for a few years now. Right across from the beach, with a balcony to sit out on.

All of those places (Inn at Cape May, Montreal Inn, etc) look lovely, but we are looking for a bit less 'charm' and 'interior decoration' and more beds, kitchen facilities, etc for our $200 or so per night. I guess that means a home rental (?)

I've looked at patentlysilly's link and there appear to be some possibilities there. It also looks like we might luck into a REAL deal there if we wait until the last minute and take 'pot luck' (based on some properties' pricing in there for THIS week.)

Other sources for rentals?

Mount Vernon motel and Jetty motel. I've stayed at Moint Vernon twice and my friend stayed at Jefty next door. Nice and clean and had some sort of kitchenette set-up.

Family efficiency is 269 per night. It's right across the street from the beach, close to everything in town, easily bikeable to the bird sanctuary and light house, has comfy beds and flat screen TV's.

We never made it there in 2012, but are thinking about it again for this fall. However, we wouldn't have our kids with us (both in college) but likely would be there with my in-laws. We travel with them a lot and do share lodgings with them during our travels. I will be reviewing all of the suggestions from before but if anyone has new or different ideas, please post.

I was just looking at the Sandpiper Inn today. There are rooms with kitchenettes and nice views, and it seems walkable to everything. We might go this weekend. If so, I'll report back.

I've had great luck renting beach houses with friends and family, both through VRBO and realtors. That might be better if you want more space.

The Periwinkle Inn? I've never stayed there, but a friend recommended it because of the efficiency rooms. It's right across from the beach and reasonably priced. They had a big renovation a few years back, so I don't know if that changed (or the reasonable prices).

My family rents a great house in North Cape May. Walking distance to the bay beaches, but about a 7 minute drive into town. Worth checking out that area as well! We found it through VRBO.
