Tabloid titan Jimmy Breslin — the cigar-chomping, hard-nosed newspaperman who won the Pulitzer Prize for his Daily News’ columns championing ordinary New Yorkers — has died, according to two friends of his family. He was 86.
David Rockefeller, age 101, grandson of John D., former Chair of Chase Manhattan Bank:

Colin Dexter, who wrote all the Inspector Morse novels, has died at home, aged 86.

Beloved by millions, this is a sad loss. A modest man with rich appreciation of language, history, art and music, Dexter's vocations enriched his students, readers, viewers and, of course, his family and friends. What a full life!
Chuck Barris, 87, developer of the Dating Game show, Gong Show, and writer of the song, Palisades Park. Ask not for whom the gong tolls....

My grandmother loved this show. Great memories watching this with her ... and her laugh.
James Cotton, harmonica charmer.... sigh

Yvgeny Yevtushenko has died.

I admit, I thought he'd died years ago, still this news rocks me. His books were prominent on the bookshelves in our our house when I was young; my parents read and reread them. Big Sunday afternoon discussions around the importance of each new one, how good the translation was, etc.
For some reason I tried to tackle Babi Yar when I was 8 or 10 years old...couldn't finish it, the realism coupled with my family's experiences was just too much. I'd already read Uris, skipping the 'mush' but this was different writing. This was when I learnt the power of witness journalism and knew my passion was Words.
just so many notable people....
Now word has come out about the founder of Roland, Ikutaro Kakehashi. So much of the music we love now and loved growing up could not have been possible without his input...
New Zealand and Australia are in shock. Prolific and brilliant, albeit humble, satirist and comedy writer John Clarke died suddenly on the weekend.
From time to time, marksierra and I have shared clips of his humour, which ranged through many many spheres throughout 27 years of professional career. There were the Fred Dagg years, the famed sports commentating (just google 'farnarkling' and prepare to laugh at both 80s fashions and the real-time parodies of sports journalism), world sports' mini-series The Games, then the distilled biting commentary sans props or costumes known as Clarke & Dawe.
And all the while, Mr Clarke was writing for and with others, mentoring newcomers, teaching and sharing. I've had the joy of meeting Bryan Dawe once, years ago, and know how much they both enjoyed feedback and interaction with audiences and fans. (I've mentioned it before) Bryan will be no less devastated than the Clarke clan.
Vale, Mr John Clarke. Thank you for every chuckle, and for every wince a conscience felt after viewing/listening to your work.
Open up the door b****!
This is wooba gooba with the green teeth, let me in!!

David Letterman's mom passed away. She was always a great presence on the show.

Probably shouldn't have written or released it then.
Charlie Murphy, Eddies brother, and hilarious celebrity story teller of the Chappelle Show.

Somewhere in a box, I have an autographed college book J. Geills signed for me when I stalked him going into a Dunkin Donuts on Boylston Street in Boston. He was so incredibly nice and not bothered. RIP, sir.
