Bring Out Your Dead! The celebrity death thread....

Eric Carle, 91, died on Sunday, May 23, 2021  at his summer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts.  He was an author and illustrator of children’s books, including “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

I vividly remember my mum’s delight when she discovered Hungry Caterpillar. She was working as a kindergarten assistant then and one of her favourite tasks was Story Time - an avid and very expressive reader, she introduced ‘her’ kids to an early copy. For weeks, that class refused their nap until she’d read Hungry Caterpillar, and a couple learnt to read it for themselves.

To capture a young child’s imagination and foster curiosity and passion is such a gift. There must be billions of readers, of families, remembering Eric Carle and wondering how different life would be without his magic.

Gavin MacLeod, star of three classic TV shows.

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/gavin-macleod-love-boat-captain-185739159.html

Gavin MacLeod, a sitcom veteran who played seaman “Happy” Haines on “McHale’s Navy,” Murray on “Mary Tyler Moore” and the very different, vaguely patrician Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat,” has died. He was 90.

MacLeod’s nephew, Mark See, confirmed his death to Variety. MacLeod died in the early morning on May 29. No cause of death was given, but MacLeod’s health had declined in recent months.

Multi-award singer B.J. Thomas, at the age of 78, from lung cancer.

Just read the news re BJ Thomas. And that’s my ‘third’ for the day - a childhood friend died unexpectedly yesterday after a long illness and was buried today. Due to Melbourne’s current lockdown, only 10 people could be there and the family decided against web streaming.

It seems that we’re losing a lot of creativity, charm, good humour and good memories of somewhat less-stressed, more neighbourly times even if our personal circumstances weren’t as comfortable. Times of change, eh?

I’ll have to commit to memory the trivia of the longest song title to top the Hot 100 (parenthetical included, I assume). Not a bad chorus to have tumbling through my brain right now, either.

This was a harsh one for me. Our next pantomime is going to be heavily influenced by The Love Boat, so I've been watching the show a lot recently, including last night (there's a Love Boat channel on pluto.tv).

Three in a row:

Network

Silver Streak

Mikey and Nicky

On a sitcom full of characters who could have easily become complete cartoons if not for the tremendous talents of the writers and performers, Frank Bonner had the toughest role of all, and he performed it perfectly. Smiling just thinking about the personal deal I’m sure Herb got from this WKRP sponsor.

War criminal Donald Rumsfeld has died.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-rumsfeld-dies-88-former-192524266.html

"Donald Rumsfeld – Republican power broker, controversial defense secretary and architect of the Iraq War – died Tuesday, days before his 89th birthday, his family said Wednesday."

good riddance Rummy.

Here's a more honest obit than you're likely to find in mainstream sources.

Rachel Maddow had a remarkable piece on Rumsfeld, showing what a soulless racist sh!t he was.

Oh. This is sad, too.

So many people have revisited the classic superheroes over the past 18 months; guess we think of all the film and actors as timeless too.

Ayesha K. Faines, a veteran journalist who worked for news stations in New York City and Florida, died last Friday, according to a former employer.

A cause of death has not been released for Faines, who died “unexpectedly,” announced the Jacksonville, Fla., TV outlet News4Jax.

Maplewood's own Suzzanne Douglas passed away. I remember her from the Parent hoodHow Stella Got Her Groove Back and other guest roles on numerous tv showsRest in Power.

One of my heroes, Ron Popeil, has died.

Before Malcolm Gladwell became a brand, he wrote a profile of Popeil where he talks about getting his start pitching kitchenware on Jersey Shore boardwalks.

Chuck Close, of the really close-up school of portraiture. 80 something.

tongue laugh  We are devastated in this household: just learnt that Jill Murphy, who wrote The Worst Witch series, has died:

I think her family knows how beloved she was; may they find comfort in such rich shared memories all around the world.

ETA: Oh! ‘Ms Bat’ has died too! Una Stubbs, who was in Summer Holiday and other Cliff Richard films, and was Mrs Hudson to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, died last week

My wife, who I believe loves Chuck Close more than any other other artist, took that quite personally, but doesn't post much here anymore.

So I'm going to post about this guy.

I did not grow up learning American History like you did. I came to America knowing some of your wacky mythology, and then this book.

Don Everly!!

I don’t which I find harder to believe - that he was 84, or that he’s actually no longer with us.

While I was learning lies in third grade, and shortly before the Everly Brothers became a name I’d recognize though Happy Days, our teacher played “I Love” in class and had each of us draw a picture of something we loved.

I just heard this now, too - I loved their music as a teenager. My cousin got to meet Phil and Don a few times and always had such good things to say about them. Sorry to hear Don's gone now, too.
