boiler

Hi. Anyone have any brand/installer recs for a gas powered boiler for steam heat? Thanks.

What do you want to know in particular? Because of the way they are constructed, it's best to stick with the top-selling brands which are Burnham, Weil-McLain and Peerless. Other manufacturers use a cheaper construction method which puts vital components, like the electronic gas control valve (GCV), unprotected on the outside of the jacket. Some boilers (Burnham) come with ports already drilled into it to allow for hot water heater connections or baseboard heating to work along with, or independently of, the steam heat.

Weil-McLain and Peerless use larger steam piping connections than Burnham which makes the installation cost a bit more but may in some cases produce a better quality of steam, which in turn makes the system running more efficiently and quietly.

The conventional wisdom around here is to pick an installer and go with the installer's recommendations. It's hard to become an educated consumer about boiler brands and models. Installers prefer solid, reliable equipment because they will be maintaining it for the next 20 years. You can find a lot of recommendations in previous threads.
