Bird in Memorial Park

This beautiful bird is hanging out in Memorial Park. Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? It has a dark long tuft of hair hanging down the back of its head.

I would say Great Blue Heron

I think it's a Great Blue Heron. I've seen it in the stream area over by the golf course.

Thanks! It is now posing for pics at the Duck Pond.

one or two of them have been in the area for a while. You often can see one standing in the water in one of the first few ponds in the Reservation towards Millburn.

Nice photos! It is Great Blue Heron. The Grey Heron, although a bit similar is native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa.

I really don't like to disturb them but its hard to resist the temptation to toss a pebble n the water to get them to fly. Their wingspans are astonishing.

Not related to Gil Scott-Heron.

Great Blue

It took me several years before I was able to get a photo of a Great Blue in flight. Mostly, I was not able to get the camera out of the trunk and aimed on time. My next goal is a photo of a Swan in flight.

It's a great blue. There are usually a few nesting in the great swamp. I just came back from Florida, where there are hundreds of them. It's nesting time down there now, and babies can be seen in the nests.

There was a Blue rookery in the Great Swamp. That lasted for a couple of years until a Red Tailed set up a nest about 50 ft away. Its been three years since the rookery has seen a Blue.

I remember that rookery. The treetop nests were visible from Old Short Hills Road.

One of those birds pooped on my football team during summer camp. Flew right over us during warm-ups.
