Basement Renovations

Hi MOL,

I'm looking for a "GREAT" contractor to renovate my basement and welcome all references. We all know and have had horror stories about contractors. Would like to avoid another one at all cost!

Thanks

Could you clarify what you are looking for:

  • Cleaning up unfinished basement (laundry room, pantry area, etc.)
  • Complete basement renovation
  • Or ???

A word of caution.  Remember that a basement is below ground and sooner or later it will flood either from rain, hurricane, sewer back up, leaky plumbing or washing machine problem.  So, think of this when planning your renovation.

Excellent point.  I'd advise choosing materials that are resistant to water, cement board instead of dry wall or wood paneling, all weather carpeting or laminate or even bare concrete for flooring.  Also ensuring that the utilities are higher off the ground than normal i.e. outlets and wiring.

Of course if you don't have a sump pump and/or a french drain this would be a really good time to put one in, as well as a sewer backflow preventer.
