Avatar assistance workshop

Huh. FWIW, I am using a MacBook Pro and Firefox.

Trying to resize my avatar and keep getting an error that it has to be a minimal size 196x196px. I've resized it to 196 X 241 and it still won't accept it. Any ideas?

You have to be really careful about cursor positioning and, in one case, I hit delete and lost the opportunity to place my cursor outside the quote.

Not an avatar problem post.  It was just a comment on joanne's further up-thread.

However, my response appeared within joanne's quoted section, not separately to it.

As it seems to have done, similarly, here.

Not an avatar question (still not trying to do that) but how do I get to participated discussions? I thought I did that yesterday but now today I can't. Can you @jamie start a general thread about helping us and others can chime in to help? Thanks.

I asked this question also and was pointed to My Account where you can click through some options to see "joined discussions" (participated) and "my discussions"  (I'm not actually looking at it right now so those might not be the exact titles.)  But this is a lot of work, so I'm hoping that we will get the "Participated Discussions" and "My Discussions" views back soon.

(Also, when you go into My Account, you can't get back to the forums (or at least not easily), but that's apparently a bug that has been logged.)

It's kinda like spring flowers.  Avatars popping up all over. oh oh

I may contact you offline to get help with my avatar. If you don't mind. BTW, how come I need to put my comment above the quote or else my comment seems to get included in the quote? Anyone?

 Like this ?

Chrome on XP or another OS? Or do you mean an old version of Internet Explorer?

Windows XP. I also have Chrome on my computer but prefer not to use it.

Chrome is a browser (for most people). Windows XP is an operating system. I assume you mean Internet Explorer 8?

Jamie, I was able to size and upload my picture easily. Can you please make the avatars display larger? It would be so nice. Full size may not be necessary, but bigger would be better. Thanks.

Yes lazydog, like that. Care to explain? I'm not the only person who is having this problem. TIA.

Whew, I'm back.

It's going to take some time to get used to this new view, especially until everyone restores their avatars so it doesn't look so bland.

My one comment so far is that there's a little too much vertical white space, so that even on a large screen, you have to scroll to see all of the categories, for example. There are also wasted bands of horizontal white space on either side of the actual content.

Thanks, Jamie and Dave, for all your effort. I'm sure we'll all like the new site once we get over the visual dissonance.

Either I did something right or the bug is now fixed.

TEST

I couldn't do it in IE, so I went to Firefox and the "Submit" button was there

You can put your comment below the quote, but you need to watch your cursor position and make sure it is below the little gray bars that show up around the quoted text (which is what I'm doing with this post now.)

ETA - Happy to try to help, but no guarantees.  I kind of stumbled around to get mine to work.

Thanks sac! I'll see if I can figure it out or look for another avatar of better size. Not gonna even focus on that until probably the weekend.

I would like this also, but obviously other things are higher on the priority list.  I seem to recall an upgrade a while back when the avatars were TOO big and that also caused problems, so I suppose that we should be careful what we wish for.

Just posting so I can see what my avatar looks like. Small? Large? Let's find out!

ParticleMan:  I am using an ancient desktop that lacks the resources to handle any remotely modern version of any browser.  Version of Chrome seems to work.  Ancient IE not so much.

Looks good to me!

Took me four or five tries, but I think I've got it...

Where can you start a new discussion?

As far as my avatar issues go, I'm hoping when we are all on the worldweb ., things will work out.

Click the + next to the Recently Created/Recently Updated buttons

When you're on the main page or a category page there's a + icon - that adds a new discussion:
