Anyone heard about this Columbia HS assault?

VG has an article on it.

Sees like too much is being made of it but there was a mention of it on News radio 88 this evening.

Given the description, doesn't sound like enough is being made of it.

The nj.com headline makes it seem like this event was something far far more dramatic than a small brief fight right outside of the school, at the corner of Valley & Parker, where there is usually a crossing guard, and police presence just up the block. But the article is light on actual details, so it may be embellishing to fill in the blanks.

I'm also curious about what occurred, but the only facts given in the article is where it states that the charges are "simple assault" -- which can be the charge for pushing or slapping someone in an argument.

I read a disturbing series of tweets about it a few days ago from a relative of the victim. I'd link to it, but I suspect thread nuking would ensue, as she names one of the alleged perpetrators. At the time, they were very upset the kids involved were still in school and uncharged, despite there being video of the attack; looks like that's now changed, at least.

Story seems to be: at least two students attacked another (from behind by some accounts), though there may have been others involved, while other students cheered and filmed. The girl was saved from ongoing assault only by a passing motorist (was a parent or teacher I believe) who held her in her car until police arrived. Several videos are circulating.

NJ.com light on details? I'm shocked! They are one step ahead of the National Enquirer IMHO. I read stories almost every day that are sensationalist at best, pure fantasy at worst. They should just go out of business already.

If true, there's no excuse for Ramos not being aware of the incident until the mother contacted him.

What's up with this????? Why was this not reported as a bias crime?

http://joestrupp.blogspot.com/2017/02/chs-assualt-victims-mom-says-biased-mob.html

Interestingly, early reports were quite quick to point out that it wasn't a bias crime. Someone has their signals crossed, that's for sure...

Sad. I feel badly for the parent. The problem of a bias crime is/should be in the hands of the police, not the school. What are the police doing about it?

Of course in today's society every one is loathe to consider anything against a white person a bias attack. They will think if the victim is white the victim must deserve it.

Gilgul, seriously, "every one"? Do you know, or have you actually heard, even one person who believes that? straw. man.

No

Restorative Justice doesn't require that victim or offender are informed they are currently participating. Only (state, school, police) need to know.

Why do you say that?

The first sentence of your RJ link says: "Restorative justice is an approach to justice that personalizes the crime by having the victims and the offenders mediate a restitution agreement to the satisfaction of each, as well as involving the community."

How do you mediate restitution to the victim if the victim and offender are kept out of the loop? I went to an RJ presentation a while back, and it seemed to include a mediation and/or therapy approach to determine the form of the restitution.

Two students were charged. The police are involved. I have no idea what the school is doing since they don't comment on anything:

"Police are investigating the alleged attack of a 16-year-old girl by two of her classmates.
Authorities are investigating the incident. (File photo)
According to a release from police Wednesday, a 15-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were charged with simple assault in connection with the Jan. 18 attack, which allegedly took place at the corner of Valley Street and Parker Avenue in Maplewood, right outside Columbia High School. All three students attend the school, police said."
