Any idea about the standing water in the train underpass?

It seems like there has been standing water in the train underpass for several weeks now, perhaps longer. It's mostly on the ground but some of the dampness is on a few steps, too. Any idea where it's coming from? Clearly it should be addressed before it gets cold.

I've been trying to find information about that too, with no luck. I'm amazed that nothing's been done about it. For what it's worth, I just registered a complaint at NJtransit.com, and if I have time this morning I'll mention it to the station agent. I'm no engineer but every time I walk through that underpass I think, probably it'll take the whole thing collapsing before it's every maintained.

Issue is one of poor drainage.  I have seen water rushing down the stairs during a heavy rain, with nowhere to go.  Some is also leakage, though this is far less than what results from the drainage issue.  NJT is responsible for maintenance.  This doesn't mean that the town cannot get involved.  Consider speaking at the next TC meeting and requesting that the town contact NJT to get an unsafe condition remediated.  Based on prior experience in similar situations, I would suspect that the TC will comply with your request.  Sending an email to each of the TC members and/or speaking with one or more of the TC members during their office hours in advance of speaking at a TC meeting could increase the likelihood of your request being approved.

I think we should all complain to NJT -- https://njtransit.secure.force.com/customerservice/ContactUs

Can't hurt, might help -- before we are all slipping and sliding once it freezes!

UPDATE:  This afternoon, NJT responded to my complaint from this morning!  It was a sympathetic, professional reply, which boiled down to:

"Please be assured your comments regarding the issue you have presented have been forwarded to our Rail Maintenance personnel for review. Upon an investigation, appropriate corrective action will be taken."

I agree with iwasmim's comment above.  I'd guess the more complaints they receive, the quicker they'll attend to the problem. So if you feel like it, here's the link I used:

Thanks for starting this thread and for the link. I also just logged a complaint online.  This situation has been going on for a long time and must be corrected.

What is our town doing to rectify this situation?  It doesn't appear much...  They should be taking the laboring oar here to have this fixed before frost, IMO.  Regardless, I logged my complaint.

Why not ask them yourself? If you haven't had a dialogue about whether they're even aware of the situation then why say "it doesn't appear much".

Remember a few years ago after Sandy or one of the other storms, that tunnel was filled with water up to about a foot from the ceiling? There was even a photo posted on MOL showing that flood.

The town does not own the property and as a state agency, NJT is even immune to being fined or other action by the town for violations of codes. So other than complain to the agency there is absolutely nothing the town can do.

I was just there about an hour ago and it looks like they're doing something about it.  It was dry for the first time in weeks and a few workers looked like they may have been patching something up?

Agreed but the town complaining is likely to produce more result than a few individual complaints.

I agree with you oakland2. When the town gets involved things can often get done quicker. Look at how the midtown direct commuters from Maplewood got several buses into the city this summer when at first NJ Transit had just designated them to depart from South Orange and not Maplewood.

Here's the response that I received from NJT.
